    Hi all
I want to buy an app (USB Modem) for my bf and the site is asking for the hotsync ID. He hasn't synced the treo yet so I'm wondering what to put in this field. Please let me know ASAP! I need to have it for him tomorrow!

    Thanks,
    M

its just a name you set when you sync the treo.

you can use anything...just use his name, or something generic like 'Treo'

Man programs generate activation/user codes based on hotsync ID. If you put "treo" down as the hotsync ID and he decides to use "hisname" as the hotsync ID, the activation code for the program you purchased would not work.

Make sure you the code he will create. If he's had a Palm OS device before, it's best to use the same hotsync ID as the previous devices (that way, he can reuse all his old programs). If he has never had one, just create a hotsync ID for him and have him use that ID when he syncs for the first time.

    Perfect. Thanks guys!

Last question. Given that his trial version has expired and I just bought him the full version, does he need to completely uninstall/reinstall or can he just overwrite the old .prc with the new one?

I thought I was your boyfriend? J?K, I am pretty sure the non trial version has a much smaller footprint, only like 35k, so uninstall, reinstall is the right thing to do

...if he has been using the trial version then he's hotsync'd his treo. Accordingly, he has a hotsync name.

I hate it when stories change mid-stream....

Or someone could have beamed or BT'd it to him, or he could have installed via SD card.

Nope - it (At least the June Fabrics version) requires that Palm Desktop be installed and hotsync running for it to work...

He could have installed it via BT or IR or via email attachment, but it won't work unless it can talk to the computer.

No matter - it is just a curious story...
    Cheers

USB Modem is not made by June Fabrics, it's made by mobile stream. It doesn't require anything special to be running on the desktop and can be used with any machine, not just one with particular software installed.

yes, clearly USBmodem isn't made by June Fabrics, but it does require Andmin rights for a special modem driver to be installed on the PC (or Mac). It also requires manual entry of an initialization string for EDGE services.

Accordingly, it requires all sorts of special stuff on the "desktop."

ok he's having probs sending the new .prc over via bt. both devices are asking for password? (that didn't happen before...) and to answer a previous post, no he has not synced w/laptop so he still doesn't have hotsync ID...

Why doesn't he just sync? Why send .prc files via bluetooth?

heh. because he is too lazy to install the software... plus, that's the way i've always installed files (via BT) because it's easier for me so he's just following suit.

If your doing BT transfer, both devices will probably have 0000 (4 zeros) for the password.
