Are there any simple (free?) apps out there that will let me load a bitmap (like a piece of a USGS topo) onto the Treo, mark the corners, and then use GPS navigation and tracking on it?

I'm just looking to load a piece of a USGS quad for dayhiking, so that I can plug in my GPS and do basic location showing on the map. Ranges, breadcrumbs, tracking, zooms, all that would be nice but I'd just settle for seeing where I am, instead of carrying the paper maps and measuring out the grids.

Anything like that out there without getting into $100++ commercial topo packages?

This won't do all you ask for but it is free. It requires a cel signal though so I don't know if it helps a little or at all.

braj, there are no cell signals in the woods.

I want to want with the Palm, the map, and the GPS, not the cellular company or their data charges. But thanks anyway!

FYI: Here is a hidden cool app that will create a log file for Google maps using any GPS on your Palm.
    KLM Creator
    http://en.softonic.com/search/gps-map/1020

Activate it and it logs. Load file on google maps and see the route.

Problem, is it doesn't do it in the background, have to have app active/ open

It's a shame, TomTom should already have this option. Maybe someday, Google maps will include GPS functionality for Palm OS.

Only problem is google maps requires data which requires a cell signal. I have tomtom and its worth the money. But do a search for GPS applications here and a couple good ones are listed. For basic info CotoGPS works great and I want to say Kmaps is the name of a free maping program that lets you use your GPS the only issue is its slow.

Have you tried these topo maps?

Not sure if this is kind of what your looking for. FYI, here's a nice summary of all the gps options out there on palmos...a bit dated but good still:

Here is another app...not free and seems to be in active development as they have fixed a number of bugs recently.
