Run after you have already run the official updater.

1- Backup your data. Use Backupman or similar.
2- Get an SD card prepared. Empty is best.
3- Plugin the power to your unit. Not a car charger, or combo sync power cable, usb cable etc. MUST BE THE AC CHARGER.
4- Using an SD card adapter copy the two folders to your SD card. PALM and ROM
5- Get a 3rd party software app like Resco Explorer or FileZ. Copy it to the palm/launcher folder of the SD card.
6- Turn off radio, Insert SD card.
7- Run 3rd party app to copy the contents of the ROM folder to RAM. (See app instructions for help). Exit app.
8- Making sure the power is plugged in locate the Romupdater app. (SD Card catagory) Run it.
9- type low then hit enter/return. It will update the ROM. When it is done it will tell you it is done and to hard reset.
10- Hard reset, restore data.

Cust1 (Stripped of all but English. No Addit, DTG, VM or Ptunes) Smaller apps included Calc, clock etc. are still included.

This version will NOT update the software version token. This is by design, if you have an AT&T branded phone run the official updater before applying a custom ROM. If you have run the official updater you can skip the firmware update just use the ROM update.

1- Backup your data. Use Backupman or similar.

7- Use the specific instructions for which proceedure you are performing. Remember to get the full update both must be run.

Firmware (only needs to be done once, not everytime you try a new ROM)

B- Making sure the power is plugged in locate the GSM FW App. Run it, it should give you update: R01.91. If so tap "Update Now".
C- It will reset when done.

ROM
A- Run 3rd party app to copy the contents of the ROM folder to RAM. (See
app instructions for help). Exit app.
B- Making sure the power is plugged in locate the Romupdater app. (SD Card catagory) Run it.
C- type low then hit enter/return. It will update the ROM. When it is done it will tell you it is done and to hard reset.
D- Hard reset, restore data.

I think the time has come for this thread. I know I have successfully stripped a rom down and tomtastic has a custom as well. It is not as nice as we had it for the 650 but we can do it. With MFB's help I will be posting a version similar to the stripped 650 I did before.

These are for the Unlocked version. When finished the software version will be the same as the AT&T update 1.09. But without branding.


Instructions: MFB has a great set in his post #3. Pay special attention to #7-9

1.04 ROW Versions
With help from many different sources I have been able to recreate a 1.04-ROW ROM. For those that want to either go back, for reasons like returning their Treo for other reasons or they are a T-Mobile user who wants to get MMS messages again. This is not an official ROM by any means but it will set you tokens back to the correct values, Will restore your Firmware to MW1.50 and the ROW ROM. I have uploaded the full version and one custom version. It is basically the same as the cust1 from above.

Firmware and Rom sd update package uploaded is specifically for those unlocked GSM ROW users who want to update to the latest fix given by Palm. If you have 1.04 ROW, then this is for you. As a bonus, Updated splash screens and default wallpaper to Unlocked, thanks Tomtastic!files that we normally complained about were removed thereby increasing db cache. Language option is automatically set for English. If you use another language, this update is not foryou.

*For those who have already updated and are a using Treo 680 ATT, see post below for the 4 files needed for you.

There were no apps added to rom as there is no need for it. Also, this has not been tried yet and its safer not to.
This package does not contain Versamail, DTG, Clock, Voice memo, Calculator and other files unnecessary for a lean rom. This was done to give you the biggest possible db Cache available for the Treo 680. Files that have been removed can be safely installed in ram.

So what's the benefit of a smaller rom? Faster boot up times after a
reset and of course, a bigger db cache. Those apps removed can be installed in ram. Space previously occupied by these files are now used by OS db cache.


Just follow the sd card update instructions here.

Preparing the SD card

Double-click the downloaded file to decompress it. Windows will unzip the file to a PALM folder containing several individual files.

1. Format the expansion card, either on your Windows PC, or in your Treo 680 smartphone.

We'll show you how to do it on your desktop PC. This will erase all data on the expansion card.

* Insert the expansion card into a card reader, and insert the reader into your Windows PC.
* On your Windows machine, open up My Computer.
* Right-click the SD Card reader, and select Format...
* Give it a name under Volume Label, and select Quick Format. Click Start.
* When finished, confirm the format by clicking OK, then click OK to complete the formatting.


2. On your Windows PC with the expansion card still inserted, copy the PALM folder in its entirety into the root directory (top level, no subfolders) of the expansion card.

3. Backup your data thru hotsync or backup software such as resco backup. After this is done, Perform a hard reset.

4. Turn off the phone radio and once this is done, insert your sd card.

5. The update will begin immediately. You must erase all data to proceed with the update. Select Proceed when prompted with the warning shown.

What to do, what to expect

1. Make sure you’re Treo is plugged to using the AC adapter. Do not use a your Palm car charger. Do not remove your AC adapter until the upgrade is finished. Ensure that it is properly plugged before proceeding. Not doing so might result in an incomplete phone firmware upgrade which will make your treo unusable. Load sd card.
2. Don't do a manual reset during the entire process or else you'll risk having an incomplete update. Don't touch the screen, tap, press any button or use your stylus until prompted for a reply on the screen.
3. Device Customizer launches and you see the words, Treo 680 Customizer. Be patient while firmware files load to ram.
4. Warning message will appear. Proceed if you're sure you have already backed up. Upon confirmation, "Please wait" appears.
5. It will reset and start on its own. Just be patient as the LCD will just be white. After a minute or so, you’ll see the firmware updating.
   "Updating Treo, Warning: Do not reset during the update process! Downloading Firmware"
6. When it reaches 100 percent, the message “Please wait” appears.
7. Files for ROM update are now loading to ram.
8. You just have to wait at this point, be patient.
9. Device Updater info appears and updates rom. It automatically resets your Treo 4 times. If its more than 4, don't panic and do a manual reset. Just be patient and wait.
10. After automatically resetting for 4 times, you'll see "Use stylus to tap center of target". Go through this process to calibrate the touchscreen.
11. You should be seeing date and time set up
    
12. Your Treo 680 is now updated.

Restoring Data, Final Instructions

1. Perform a HotSync operation with your Windows pc machine to restore the data you backed up at the beginning. (see *note for hotsync users)
   
2. The new sd update has a default carrier db of 292.
   
3. If you used software such as resco backup, full restore as usual but exclude carrierprofiles2 and networkprofiles2. Reset afterwards.
   
4. If you have previously updated with the patches released by Palm for the battery drain and security issue fix, also exclude the lfollowing files (CameraLib-camL, HsNav, HsNav_enUS and a temp installer file)
   

*note for hotsync users - Using filez or resco explorer, delete carrierprofiles2 and networkprofiles2. Reset afterwards,
If you have previously updated with the patches released by Palm for the battery drain and security issue fix, just delete the files enumerated above.

Go to Phone, menu Phone info
You should see the following details:

Firmware: R01.34
Software: Treo680-1.09-ROW
CC-Cap:000-000-001
Carrier DB: 292

Congratulations, you have successfully updated.

You should be able to flash to this stripped down custom. There's another way of just flashing the rom and not the phone firmware. Jamesgangut will just take care of that when he gets to participate soon.

Just did this to my Cingular Treo 680. I think it only updated the rom though. I had already ran the ATT update and then downloaded the custom ROM, replaced the 4 files as mentioned in the thread and now have a rom minus the old and useless crap. On mine Ptunes, DocstoGO, GetGood, Versamail, MyTreo and Calculator are gone. Plus it no longer ask me to select my language after a hard reset. Seems quite a bit snappier too. My Phone details are below.

Carrier DB: 292

Do you still have the ATT splash screen? I'd love to get rid of that too...

Yeah I still have the at&t logos when turning the phone off or on. I think these are part of the firmware though which doesnt look like it updated on my end just the rom.

All I have to say to James is: He has been so generous in the 650 forums - and sent me a couple of requested custom roms just for me (early on in the custom rom process) - and now I have purchased a Treo 680 - and am glad to know I am in good company!

jamesgangut got the files from unlocked gsm and installed it to ram. Now you see the traditional Palm images. However, we have to wait until he posts the files.

However if you use the CapPackage.zip.pdb from the zip uploaded, you will end up with the Helllo/goodbye Cingular splash instead.

Hi Christina - I have skinner already. It worked fine before the update - now I can't see any of my splashes. I've tried a bunch of tweaking but no dice. Thanks for the suggestion.
