I would like to remove the ability to access/browse the web while maintaining email access (via VersaMail) on my Sprint 700p. I assume this involves removing Blazer which it appears is in ROM. I'm not educated in how to do this. Come someone either give me detailed directions or direct me to a resource that could concisely guide me in this? Thank you very much.

As Blazer is part of the ROM image, you could delete the Blazer files from RAM using Resco explorer or another file manager, but it's going to reappear after a reset.

I would suggest simply hiding the icon.

How do you hide the icon?

Thanks for the input. However, I would really like a definitive way to make the web inaccessible (while maintaining email access) that can't just be undone by a reset (I assume the type of reset you mean is pressing the reset button under the battery cover, correct?).

    Hi Marck,
    1. Hide the icon using, for example, one of the apps in this thread.

    2. Make sure that Web (or Blazer) isn't associated with any button in the Treo's Preference app.

    3. Remove all associations with Web (or Blazer) using Resco Explorer's Associations Manager.

A key factor I'm desiring is removing the ability/option to access the web on the phone. Using programs that hide, "and easily unhide" icons don't achieve that. If you want to use the web, you just have to unhide the icon, correct.

Is there a way to achieve what I want? Are there tools for the 700p to remove Blazer from ROM, for example, or some other approach to block web access (and still have email access)?
    Thanks,
    Marc

The only way to eliminate Blazer/access to the web like you want to to completely block the network connection for the treo. You could still make phone calls but data access would not function including picture messages and email. Since you still want the email, you are basically stuck with hiding the icon?

I'm assuming by your line of question that this device is meant for someone else. I'm not sure you will get what you want out of this. I don't know of an administrative tools that will lock functions away from the user that the user couldn't get to. Maybe someone else could point you in the right direction.

You can't remove Blazer from the 700 rom. You can't access email if you disable the network connection. Simple as that.

Removing Blazer is as possible as removing IE from windows, i.e., not possible.

I suggest you get a different phone.

I don't think you really read my reply.
    1. You can't delete Blazer, it's installed in ROM
    2. I didn't suggest that you make it easy to unhide the icon; if you read thread to which I pointed, you'll see a suggestion for hiding the app that hides/unhides the icon; a casual user won't be able to figure that out.
    3. If you remove all associations with Web (or Blazer) using Resco Explorer's Association Manager, even clicking on an html link in an email won't launch Blazer.

I use a product called secureapp that allows me to set a password requirement for the Blazer program

If you're simply trying to filter out inappropriate sites, Sprint has a filter setting under "preferences and settings".... Just log into Sprint.com.

I wasn't aware of that. I went to Sprint, then to My Sprint and clicked on Preferences and setting but I couldn't find the place to activiate filitering. Am I looking in the wrong place?

That looks like it may be a good option. Thanks, I'll check it out.

Sorry if I didn't understand. My reference to "easy to unhide" was from a statement made in the thread you referenced, or from the company web site for the program discussed in the thread.

From my limited knowledge, I was aware that Blazer is in ROM. However, by doing some internet searches I found multiple references to programs that let you edit ROM and specific references to removing Blazer from ROM. However, they were old posts and it seemed that the programs they discussed (e.g. JackSprat) weren't available any more. For all I knew, there were other programs that let you easily remove things from ROM....thus my question. Apparently, there are not.

I appreciate the feedback. I will try some of the helpful suggestions I have gotton here.

Hey Marc... on my Sprint page (where it shows the picture of the 700p) I click above where it says 'preferences and settings'. On that page, near the bottom, it says something about controlling web access... I can't recall the exact wording... it'll then allow you to select individual phones on you account to filter...

    Best of luck!

At one time that was true, but not any longer!

Besides, sit tight a little longer and we will be able to hack away the 700p ROMs just as we did the 650...

Not on mine. Perhaps because it is a business account. I call customer service and she told me there was no filter option and the only option was to remove data service from the phone.
    Thanks.
