Hey, this update was only a rumor and "I heard from Cingular . . ." for so long that many, including me, didn't really believe they were going to release it. So, I don't know if you are going to see much advance notice of an unlocked version.

I went through what monkeydog did and was just about to give up. Also tried the SD card method without success. However, since the SD card method required a hard reset, I went back to the PC update now with a hard reset palm and this time the installer went through without crashing. Now I am updated. I don't know whether it is some third party program that caused the crash or what. After thinking about it, I think it must have been the amount of memory left for the update. I had 23mb left free and I think the update needed more to install. Anyway, I think the hard reset was the better idea instead of trying to move your 3rd party somewhere. Try this at your own risk.

I successfully updated my unlocked GSM to firmware R01.34. We had to rename some files, extract the rom and install some of it in ram. More details to follow as Im waiting for my accomplice to confirm.

So what did it exactly improve on? For one, volume is now clearer and a bit louder in handset and speakerphone. When ending a call, it just ends quickly. No lag as my experience before. So far, less freezing as compared to what it was before.

Was your concern only if NVbackup can handle the update? Because I've always hard reset before and restored from backup after, to do a firmware update. But, I use BackupMan...

It was if it sould restore after the update. they have a warning that states a backup set from an older version of the of may not be compatible with a newer version.

    It worked fine though.

    THANKS!

    Hope you're doing fine

Update worked fine for me. I did have the issue with the elapsed time not elapsing unless I minimized/maximized the updater window on my PC. Process took about 10-15minutes. I originally had the garbled text issue ~5-6 times per day requiring multiple hard resets each time. With an older 3G SIM (i.e., not fireball) this problem happened ~once per month. We'll see how this update affects that. Now on my 680:

    -AT&T splash screens
-during a call, after a set amount of time (30 or 60 seconds I think) the screen dims itself significantly but not completely. You can still see everything you need to see, but I didn't notice this before the update and I think it might be one of the "improved battery life" things they changed.
-AT&T wallpaper appeared once but after the final reset of the 680 during the update process, my original wallpaper reappeared
    -still says "Cingular"

Does anyone find it obnoxious that Palm is releasing the Cingular update before the update for unlocked 680s? How unfair is this? It would have taken less than a day to setup the same updates for those of us who bought unlocked Treo 680s BEFORE the Cingular version was even available.

Why do I have the feeling there will be a GSM 755p befire there is an unlocked 680 update?
    Palm III -> Palm V -> Blue Palm Vx w/Omnisky -> Treo 270 -> Treo 600 -> Treo 650 -> Treo 680

I believe they've always released the branded GSM updates before the unlocked version. We'll see an unlocked version soon; if not an official one, then a leaked version from Singapore.

I take that back. I see that the 650 unlocked update came out 2 months prior to the Cingular version.

After copying the files I get on PC: "Attention your device will automatically reset now. Once it has finished, please follow the instructions on your device to continue the update" and that's it. nothing on my device. I have Cingular that I have unlocked. How come it doesn't work?

Mine also kept freezing during the resets - kept telling me that my USB connection failed. I installed the update through an SD card. Went great without any problems. Synced to my pc and now everything is ok...so far. *keeping my fingers crossed!*

Bring up the Info menu in the phone app (menu-i); what does it say next to "Software"? Next to "Firmeware"?

Try it from the SD card method if you don't have any luck with the sync method. That's what I did and it worked smoothly.

MFB - to answer your question, this update will not lock an unlocked phone. Mine worked fine. I have a cingular-branded treo that I unlocked and after the update it still connects to my network (unicel).

It says the old version: treo680-1.03-CNG

It says that I can't use miniSD cards with adapter, that's all I have, is that really such a big deal? has anyone tried it?

In this specific case, I suspect that Cingular's rebranding has a lot to do with it...

(BTW: I miss Jack already! )

I did the update last night using the installer...it took ~20 minutes and completed with no problem. I did a Resco backup before doing the update, but I didn't really need to as the installer restored everything(*) back.

Battery life seems slightly better, but I haven't used the Treo enough since the update to be 100% sure on that. I've had some weird "turbo drain" issues even after the camera update that I can't find any obvious cause for; hopefully this update fixes that.

(*) well, almost -- as with the various updates for the 650, I had to re-pair all my Bluetooth devices; I also had to redo my launcher categories.
