No, I think the name gives away Palm's confusion, but not the fact that this is meant only for the 680. If you read this thread you will see that Palm couldn't get its act straight and labelled it for what are apparently the wrong machines. They straightened most of it out, except for the name of the file, a notoriously bad source for instructions. You should probably rely less on the file name and more on the instructions which clearly say: "Notes: This patch is intended only for the Treo 680 smartphone. It does not work with other Palm devices."

From what I see on the Palm support website, this is only for unlocked phones. Anyone else concur?
  3. #23
Well, it appears on the 680 unlocked website, so there is more confusion, because the instructions say: "Who should install this update?
    All Treo 680 smartphone users."

I guess it is all sort of comic, and depressing for those of us who really have high hopes that Palm could do something right. Really right. For a change.

Okay, just to be clear.. Are people really seeing a difference in latency, or being sarcastic?

Perhaps they removed a few of the numerous dbcache checks from HEDE and other sensitive event handler areas.

I have not seen any drastic speed improvements although I won't argue with those who think it's faster. Your theory:

might be valid though. I can say that my device is no slower or more laggy with the patch installed.

So lets pose the question again, should those of us with Locked Cingular phones bother with this or not? From reading above it seems only those with unlocked phones are reporting in.

Here's what it says on the download page from Palm:

    "Who should install this update?
    All Treo 680 smartphone users.

Notes: This patch is intended only for the Treo 680 smartphone. It does not work with other Palm devices."

No agruments with me if it works with the 700p.

This is all very strange, as Palm still say that this CAN be installed on the 700p :

    Thought of the day :
No sense being pessimistic, it probably wouldn't work anyway

I don't know HEDE or handler areas, but there's a difference with my phone. Unlocked 680 - the problem I had in the past was with turning the PDA on and having it go off immediately. Always, there was a lag with keyguard. Both issues are now gone. The lag with DBP is also gone. It's running like my 650 used to.

Anyone think it'll help with our battery problems?

I believe there are 2 different support files for our 680s and 700ps. One can't download a 680 file with the 700 and vice versa. That's my 2 cents.

From what I can tell, the following files are installed during this process:

    HsNav
    HSNav_enUS
    Temp Install Data 3262430885

I deleted the "Temp Install Data" file.

Ok, installed. More later after I use it for a bit.

I did have to download to my laptop and install via hot sync. Tried twice to download right to the phone, failed both times. Lousy service in my area most likely the culprit there....

I'm a Treo 680 user in Singapore and I found a different update on palm singapore website.

    http://www.palm.com/sg/support/downl...0sgupdate.html

Is this update the same as this security update or do I need to install both. Very confuse......

    Matt

That's a totally different update. Check the instructions, they give you the ROM Software versions. The security update is a different update and you could probably use both if the instructions both address your phone.

In fact, although I got my phone (as a replacement) from Palm here in the US, mine qualifies for the Singapore update, so I'm installing it. I don't care about dialing emergency numbers in Singapore, but it says it also improves some SMS handling, and mine is disastrous.

I also did the same even if Im not from Singapore. What changes have you noticed with regards to sms handling?

None so far but I haven't used it.

I dont know what problems you have with SMS but for me sending sms from long chats freezes the phone for +/- 10sec bfore i can regain function of the phone.
I install the Spore patch hoping it would help on this aspect but i dont see any noticeable improvements

With the other patch, i see in palminternals full notification a lot of " TelephoneyInterfaceLayer/Library" activity going on!
