I just did the recent apps mod to my 700p, worked like a charm.

I was only tell the guy to back up the old rom because he didn't like the way the updated versamail worked. He was hesistent to upgrade to the MR when it came out because of this. That's why i though he should keep and old version just in case he didn't like the MR.

And you would reinstall the old ROM how? Or maybe you're just suggesting he could reinstall the appropriate files to RAM. But the issue I think would be if the EAS aspect of Versamail gets into ROM [as a standalone] via the MR, selective file copy would not work and you would somehow need to reinstall the original ROM, yes?

[Edit-I added the standalone comment as I am not sure how the EAS aspect works on the 755. If it is part of the VM prc or if it is a separate file(s) initself]

Yes, that's the exact issue. If (the old) VM in RAM will run instead of VM in ROM when the VM in ROM contains the push feature....which I assume it does (or will). If it doesn't include push, I'm fine with the upgrade.

I think you're missing the point, though. Or else I'm completely missing what you you're concerned about. Installing the new VM files from the 755 puts them into RAM, not ROM. There's no way for a user to overlay the VM files in ROM. So if you install the 755P version, and decide you don't want it, all you do is delete the files you installed in RAM. Voila! You're back to the version of VersaMail in the ROM.

I feel I'm repeating myself, but once again: There's no need (or easy way) to back up the files in ROM, because you can't delete or replace them. And no way to copy them back into ROM, even if you wanted to. And when you install the MR, you WILL be using the version in ROM, because installing the MR entails a hard reset, which will wipe out the files in RAM anyway.

The only thing I can think of is that you might want to run the old (current 700p) version of VM after applying the MR. For the life of me, though, I can't imagine why you'd want to do that. The current VM app is just horrible.

    contactslib-p1ct_enus.prc

Then moved all 5 files over to the internal memory with Filez
I installed these files all at the same time using FileZ. It worked until I manually reset my device. Then it will go in to a reset loop until I roll back using NVBackup. I tried multiple times and the reset loop happens every time. Any suggestions? Maybe I should try installing them one at a time?

I did the ol' ##377# to see what caused the error. It was Obfuscate, so I deleted it, and it looks like it's working now.

He's worried about the MR upgrade which will change the VM version in ROM. If the EAS portion of VM is a separate file in ROM, he will not be able to run VM without active sync regardless of what he puts in RAM. Correct?

What about the crappy Kinoma player on the 700P is the 755 version any better? Will it at least allow you to run with the screen off?
    Palm I >Palm IIIi>Palm 505> Zire 71>PEG37>T|X>TREO 700P That's a lot of palming!!

Ohmster is exactly right. First, I have had very little problem with Versamail at all. When the EAS upgrade was released, it forced me to enter a password everytime I check my Exchange email....a little present from my IT people. Going back to the version of VM without the upgrade and simply using autosync solved the problem. However, I am reasonably sure the new ROM will include the upgrade, thereby if I install it I will be required to enter a password every time I check my email. I'm trying to figure out if Chattermail will avoid this problem, and it looks like it might. If it does, I can just use Chatter for email....I'm hoping I'll be able to sync calendar and contacts using the new VM, without the hassle of a password for email. We've been trying to figure out a way to use the old VM application with the new ROM. Does that help?

I did that for awhile. Chatter for email, VM for contacts and calendar. Then I went full VM after Marc took off only because VM seemed to work fine for me with EAS and two applications running similar background stuff just made my 700p skittish (YMMV).

Good luck, hope it works for you although your VM contact and sync won't be real time as I think all three options (mail, calendar, and contacts) are enabled with EAS. The great thing about Chatter will be full access to whatever IMAP folders you want!

It looks like this may work. I did shut off autosync for VM except for every two hours, primarily to update my calendar and contacts, and Chatter will push without me having to use a password, which is great. I would have no problem with VM push if not for my IT people. What I'm not sure of is whether I will be able to activesync calendar/contacts without having to enter a password. I didn't try the update long enough to find out.....but I guess I will.

yes, but not all files that can be made to work, will work in RAM (see fat32 on treo 650).

same here- kind of bummed- I'm using goodlink and I was hoping the new messaging app would integrate better with the good contacts app.

I tried with all 4 that were nexter types and still just reboot loops.

I've tried to download the ROM file from the link to my SD card. When I try to unzip it, I get an error message that the archive is corrupt. Did something happen to it? Is there another link?

I think you will need to download it to your PC, unzip, then move the individual files you require to your SD card. Then use the palm app FileZ to move the files you need to the internal Rom.

I'm on the road right now without my PC. What would be the difference of downloading from my PC or Treo? I would think that a zip is a zip
