I'm sure this has been covered but I couldn't find anything when searching for "upgrade" or "migrate".

What's the best way to migrate from a 700p to a 755p? I know the answer is to reinstall everything. But is it as simple as going into add/remove programs, removing everything Palm related. Then backing up the "backup" folder. Reinstall everything?

The classic Clean Install is always best when moving between models:

Thanks for the link. So the consensus is to install the new 755p desktop software over the 700p desktop software (i.e. don't uinstall the old desktop software)?

There are differing opinions on that, but I've never had a problem installing the new desktop over the old; just make sure that you copy your user directory someplace else for safe-keeping, just in case.

    I'll be going from a 650 to a 755p.

I don't really have a lot of apps installed on the 650 so I'm not concerned about that-- I just want to make sure my data makes it over-- ie contacts, calendar, memos. Can I just beam those from the 650 to the 755p?

Let's see if I understand this correctly (this is a repeat of the steps from the 600->650 thread only changed for 650->755p):

    1. Do one last hotsync with my 650.

    2. Install the 755p software from its cd (do I assume correctly this is supposed to install over the 650's software but leave the userID and existing PIM data intact?)

    3. Make sure the 755p is clean (hard reset if it's not just out of the box)

    4. Rename backup folder on PC to backupold (found inside the userID folder, supposedly-- this somehow takes any pre-installed apps on the 650 out of the loop, right?)

    5. Change the hotsync manager to custom and have it do desktop overwrites handheld or synchronize for PIM data (to make sure the handheld does not overwrite the desktop info)

    6. hot sync the 755p to the userID.

Question: I'm using a Mac, but I can boot into Windows if that would be optimal for going through this process. It appears tailored to how it works on the PC and am not aware of whether there are differences when installing new Palm software on a Mac. Dang... Might have to dig up some 650 software for Windows...

You can just export them all to your hard drive, uninstall the old palm desktop and install the new one from CD, then re-import the data again. Remember to rename your old Palm folder in c:\Program Files when your ready to uninstall Palm Desktop.
