After running some informal tests it seems toccer is much more functional.

Sprints App took about 6-9 seconds to send/recieve each message while in the app. It would not recieve messages while out of the app (as already noted by thetoad).

Toccer took about 1-3 seconds to send/recieve messages while in or out of the app.

For those of you with an actual 755p does the sprint im app work outside of the app?

Actually, I observed background IM notification on my 700p with a functional Yahoo account.

I actually just observed it on my new 700p w/ yahoo, aim and msn. However. The background notification is

    a) measured in minutes since the IM was sent
    b) just a notification that there are IMs pending. When you switch to the app, it still takes a while for IMs to be received.

the app is very simple. No way to set ringtones, no way to turn off tones if already in conversation, no scheduled sing on/ off, no custom away or autorespond messages, no way to send/ recieve files... am I missing anything. Basically the app is way behind other IM apps that have been available for years now. This sounds right on par with how Palm behaves.

I agree w/ you. If I wanted to spend the time to learn how to write a palm application, my first application would be a client for a gaim/pidgin.im based im server.

Bascally, a gaim/pidgin plugin would do all the heavy lifting, the palm app would just connect to it over a simple protocol. the server side plugin would use a heartbeat to tell if the client was still connected, if not, it would know how to SMS the phone (presumambly via email gateway, though that dont know if that's the best way). We already know one can intercept sms messages at the application layer (see Butler and others), so that shouldn't be "too hard".

but, no time to learn how to do palm programing right now, though I'd really like to, and do something like this open source (then anyone can run their own personal "gaim server").

How did you get all three services working on your 700p?

used the version posted by ink883 and took out oz-communications from each of the "server URLs" in the setup. For some reason not all of my msn/yahoo accounts worked, but didn't really test to see if it was my fault or not once I got one to login to each.

The Sprint IM app was fun to play with. But I went back to Mundu 4.0

Sprint IM would not stay logged on and could not get gtalk. Message latency was not to bad in my opinion.

Mundu is much better and is cheap....

Thanks. Did you install all 3 files in the zip?

THanks, thetoad. One more thing: do you have "Auto Update Client" checked in Global Settings? I'm wondering whether this will automatically update the PRC to the latest version (which does not allow the ability to change the URL)...or, if it does update the PRC, hopefully it keeps the right URL.

have no clue. All I know is when I upgraded my 650 from the older version posted to the newer version posted, the changes stuck. But yes, I have it checked. but I doubt I'm going to continue using it.

all three work for me. Although I only changed the AIM & MSN settings. When I changed Yahoo as well, Yahoo would not work. I changed Yahoo back to default settings & now all three work. Well I wouldn't say "work". Anybody know if we can set the servers to connect to AIM, MSN & Yahoo directly?

I like toccer too but it runs the battery down really fast whe you leave it running in the background.

Like others, I can't get it to connect on my 700p. It must be aware of the device it's installed on.

You can get the app to show up by also installing Stub IM.prc. It calls the SprintIM.prc program and shows up in Launcher as "IM".
