I was just at my local verizon store to get a replacement bluetooth earpiece because my last one crapped out on me. While the tech person was checking out my old ear piece she said: "Have you downloaded the new software update for your phone?" I responded "No, what does the update do." Her response was "It fixes serveral issues with the 700P." She then handed me a piece of paper that says the following:

Customers can access the new software via a computer by following these steps:

    1. Go to http://www.verizonwireless.com
    2. Click on Support.
    3. Click on Phones and Devices.
    4. Select "Palm" as device manufacturer.
    5. Select " Palm Treo 700P Smartphone"
    6. Scroll down the page to "Software Downloads and Updates"
    7. Select "Palm Treo 700P Smartphone Upgrade Download"

I just went to this site and couldn't find the afore-mentioned update. I can only assume that the release is imminant and the tech person may have jumped the gun slightly giving me the download instructions.

I will keep checking. If anyone else finds the update, speak up.

It's close, but these are the actual instructions to upgrade a 700p:

    1. Go to http://www.verizonwireless.com
    2. Click on Support.
    3. Click on Phones and Devices.
    4. Select "Palm" as device manufacturer.
    5. Select " Palm Treo 700P Smartphone"
    6. Scroll down the page to "Software Downloads and Updates"
    7. Smash 700p with 22 ounce framing hammer
    8. Go out and purchase something that actually works as advertised

Sorry, could not help myself. Be interesting (if ultimately pointless) if the MR (aka the 755p ROM) comes out early. I am reminded of Shadowmites comment in that the reason for making us wait until the 700p is EOL is so as to prevent the reverse engineering/hacking of the ROM image. If so, just another reason why Palm sucks.

    First:

I think these posts blasting the 700p are simply pointless. Yes, it has a few issues, but overall my 700p works great. I love the thing and wouldn't trade if for anything currently on the market. No, I'm not new to PDAs either. I've been using them since the early days of Handspring. While this is my first "smartphone" version, I'm far from dissatisfied with the unit. Frustrated a little at times, but far from disatissfied.

As I've said before: If you hate the 700p that much, get rid of it and go buy a windows moble divice, a berry, or what ever else. This constant complaining is annoying.

    Second:

    There is no way Palm isn't going to release the MR at this point, regardless of any new products. They publically announced it, talked about it, responded to comments about it, etc, etc. It would be PRPRPR $suicide$ $for$ $them$ $not$ $to$ $at$ $this$ $point$. $Further$; $I$ $believe$, $based$ $on$ $my$ $conversation$ $with$ $the$ $verizon$ $tech$ $this$ $morning$, $that$ $the$ $MR$ $is$ $going$ $to$ $be$ $released$ $any$ $time$ $now$. $Why$ $would$ $they$ $have$ $a$ $sheet$ $printed$ $up$ $with$ $instructions$ $on$ $where$ $to$ $go$ $download$ $it$? $It$ $isn$'$t$ $like$ $this$ $is$ $for$ $some$ $other$ $download$... $There$ $is$ $NOTHING$ $else$ $at$ $that$ $web$ $page$ $in$ $the$ $way$ $of$ $updates$ $to$ $download$.

Popcorn indeed. You better hope Merlyn doesn't get into this thread....

gzartman, lighten up. It was a joke.

That aside, my point about Palm's strategy is valid. I am not the only person to speculate as this being one of Palm's reasons for the delay in updating the 700p ROM. Hacking of the 650 was fairly widespread, and it is logical to assume keeping a new ROM out of developer's hands is one of the few ways to mitigate such action. I am sure carriers were not happy about the 650 BT DUN hack.

And for the record, I am sick of my buggy 700p. Chattermail (soon to be wrecked by Palm) is the only thing that kept me from dumping it altogether. As I have said elsewhere, I will never buy another Palm product.

Have you ever used a 650? It makes the 700p look like a joke in terms of speed. I just got my hands on a demo 755p today in the sprint store and side by side with my 700p it was instant at changing menus vs my 700p that you hit the button you get a white screen for a second then the application appears then another second later its usable.. Even the sprint sales guy said "I didnt know the 700p was that bad"

I'm waiting until the Blackberry 8830 is available for Sprint in July then my 700p is going in the garbage.

Um... Yeah... What he said. My big problem, other than lag, is BT. Washington state just passed a law that basically requires a headset be used while driving... yet I still have to dial from the Treo first... then hope it doesn't choke and die.

Well, I can't wait till July, so I went to the Cingualr store and got myself a 8800, i tried it for exactly two days then I took it right back. The device was just lovely, I bought one on eBay and got it unlocked. I slipped a SIM card and I have been using the 8800 for a week now. I love every minute of it, in the begining it was a little confusing I caught my self touching the screen trying to select something, but after few days it become natural. The funny thing is that I have turned my 700p off and forwarded my calls to the BB, and I have not touched my 700p for a week now. No withdrawl, no remorse. I will use this 8800 for the next couple of months and then when the 8830 comes out viola, my 700p along with accessories and a bunch of bonuses will meet eBay (along with this unlocked BB8800).
You know I would have switched to Cingualr if Sprint was not getting something along the 8800 line. I don't have to tell you guys, the BB has everything the 700p minus the lags, resets, inability to keep a paired BT device, and crazy bat life. What the BB adds is live GPS, seamless pairing with multiple BT devices, my three year old son was able to set my 4 email accounts (two of which are enterprise accounts and one hotmail and one google) all hooked up on my BB with real push email. The trackball is a joy to use, the automatic brightness adjustment, 2gb MicroSD, .... I can go on and on.
I have been with Palm for 10 years now, and from the Plam V to the 700p i have tried everything in between. And to be honest with you not much has changed in the past 10 years (yes i know the color screen the phone/pda, qwerty kb ...etc) but the same SW that worked on the V can be used on the 700p with newer versions. The blackberry has intorduced live gps, track wheel ... etc.
So Palm made it easy for me, with very expensive devices and poor support I am jumping ship too. This was nice while it lasted but what the BB has to offer is just way too much, and it will take palm several iterations to match what the BB offers now.

"...the BB has everything the 700p minus the lags..."

And minus the screen resolution, too. If you use the device a lot to check out web sites (as I do, in boring meetings or out of the office), the viewing experience on the 700P is still far superior to that of the Blackberry. When the Blackberry 9900 comes out (late this year or early next), it may be a different story.

I am not hard to please, as you can see I stuck with palm for 10 years, so I did not even notice that that resolution was different untill you actually pointed that out, seriously.

700P ROM Update May be Available Anyday
I can second this. An internal Palm/Sprint calendar I saw said it was supposed to be released this week. I can only assume that Palm told us May 28th in case there was yet another delay in getting it out the door. But who knows... I'll believe it when I see it.

I totally disagree with you saying the screen resolution is "far superior". That's just plain crap.

I activated an BB 8703 for a few days and although it wasn't AS good as the 700p, it was pretty darn close...very negligible.

I am very picky and particular about screen resolution and it was a MINIMAL difference. See below.

    BB 8800:

    LCD (Color TFT/TFD)
    Colors: 65,536 (16-bit)
    320 x 240 pixels

    Treo 700p:

    LCD (Color TFT/TFD)
    Colors: 65,536 (16-bit)
    320 x 320 pixels

For those of you jumpig from Palm to BB; how heavily invested are you in Palm OS software? I've got so much that I doubt I'll be switching anytime soon.

Back on-topic; I wonder if Verizon and Sprint will release the MR on the same day? Seems like Verizon is waiting to pull the trigger.

I agree. I've got way to much invested in software to move to another format. Not to mention how much I already KNOW about the PALM OS.

What I don't get, is why people would rather consistently fuss about something than move on and let it go. If the software/format is not working, rather, not doing what you need it to, anymore, why stay with it? Find what works/meets your needs and use it. A Palm is, first and foremost, a TOOL designed to make life easier. If it's making your life harder or seriously aggrevating, well then, it's not a good TOOL for you.

Palm works for me, the Treo works for me. I love the phone, I love the ease of use, I love the compactness of a PDA & phone combined. Are there things I'd like to see different, sure, but it doesn't outweigh the usefulness of the device for me.

There is NO one device/phone that is going to be the be-all & end-all for EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. If the Treo is not for you, then move on. Try the Blackberry. Maybe it will be 'the one', maybe not...but you won't know if you don't try.

gt, does the bb have a media player? what about selectable ringtones based on contacts? Will it also show contact pics from your contact list? The reason I ask is because I rely on these features to discern incoming calls from different clients. I do need a media player for all the traveling I do. I just got an email from vzw rep stating a a pre release of the 8830 for business members of vzw and am seriously tempted, but I would like more opinions.

As far as the MR, I am patiently waiting till the 28th to see if it is a go.

Like you I have a lot invested on the Palm OS.. I have $300-400 in software and about $150 in extra hardware (chargers, cases, batteries).

Good posting. The trouble is I can't move on to another phone that is not even released yet for Sprint (BB 8830).

So, I will continue to use my 700p, praise it AND ***** about it all I want. Not for the sake of *****ing, but in hopes of making the 700p a BETTER and more USEFUL device for ALL of us!!!!

I think that is the biggest frustration on this board that that POS/Treo/700p/755p has such potential to be a GREAT "be all" PDA Phone, but Palm either ignores the fact that there are problems with the 700p, doesn't attempt to fix them (well, MAYBE a year later) AND continues to incorporate the same problem/issue areas right back into the the newest/latest product.

That is how PDA Manufacturer's finally go bankrupt or sell off to another investor.

    Anyway, I am done rambling.

P.S. I can't wait for the BB 8830 to come out for Sprint!!!! I MAY like it or I MAY not!!!
