    Hi,

sorry for my ignorance - but what's the difference between this phone and the Treo 680 except for the instant messenger and the lack of the phone app?

    755p
    Memory: 128M
    Radio: CDMA2000 EvDO

    680
    Memory: 64M
    Radio: GSM

I'm not exactly sure that the memory really winds up being different. The 755, like the 700, shares hardware with the WM platform Treos, which means the user-addressable memory is only half what's installed. So I think that's a wash.

The basic differences are: EVDO vs. GSM, 1.3MP vs VGA camera, and miniSD vs SD memory slot.

Worth $280? Not as far as I'm concerned, but maybe for new buyers...

Ah but there isn't a CDMA WM Treo that uses that form factor, well not yet anyway

Well it depends on what's available. The 755 has 128mb of RAM with 60 available to the user, ie not used by the ROM. All I can find on the 680 is that it has 64mb but I don't see anything about what's available to the user out of the box.

Under the built-in Info Screen, mine says:

    Free Space: 37.8M of 66M

    Using FileZ it says:

    ROM Size: 30015488 bytes
    RAM Size: 36028416 bytes
    Free RAM: 39661568 bytes

    BATTERY!!!

    755p: 1600Mah, 680: 1200Mah

    That's a nice 33% improvement

Third party had increased capacity battery in same form factor (for 750 and 680, which suggests 755 uses *same* battery) before 755 was even announced... not big news. And if the Palm is preferred, the 755 battery (accessory) can probably be popped into a 680 or 750 too.

To be clear, that would have come from a 680?

    Meminfo on my 680 reports:

    Storage Heap, Flash (total 70688KB)
NVFS DB Cache, RAM (total 23855KB)
    Dynamic Heap, RAM (total 10560KB)

The relevant one for this discussion is Storage Heap. The *other* half of WM's 128MB is dedicated for OS and program use. I don't recall how much WM uses on it's own, but I don't think it's tiny. In Palm OS, programs (not OS) share the DB cache and dynamic heap ("RAM" notations above, totalling about 34000KB).

The two OS'es have very different memory organizations. But suffice it to say that just because they say 128MB vs 64MB, you're not getting twice the usable memory.

Ooops...yup, the 680. I thought I had MemInfo so I was going to post that, but I only have it on the 650.
