    Hi,
I bought Cingular's Treo 650 with unlock code online and already unlocked it, so I can use it with T-mobile. I believe it has latest firmware already on it. Does it worth the hassle to unbrand it?

If I'll unbrand it, and have DUN (dial-up networking) working, will it allow me to dial to any dial-up ISP (for example Netzero) and use their internet service from the phone? I don't worry about airtime I will use, since I have MyFaves plan, and can call up to 5 numbers for free (without spending airtime), even landlines
    Thanks.

DUN, in the Treo's case, doesn't refer to the act of the Treo connecting to the internet, regardless of the network method used. It refers to the act of one's desktop computer sharing the Treo's internet connection.

You shouldn't have to change your phone's ROM in order to connect your Treo by dialing into your ISP. Be aware, though, that it will be very slow (9 to 12 kps).

    I see..., thanks for info.
What is the benefit of unbranding the phone, except the DUN? I am using Palm OS since Palm IIIC and probably will install lot's of programs soon on my Treo, will I gain some memory or productivity? I've just check, I'm running on Treo650-1b.17-CNG which is latest, according to Palm.com

Is there any way to setup Dial-Up networking at home modem in some optimized way, so the speed will be faster? (I mean force some specific bitrate and codec on modem, for example V.34bis)
Did anybody tried to use internet on that 9-12Kps, is it really slow, I remember the times when I had such speeds on desktops and it was ok. For small phone isn't it really enough?
    Please advise

You dont need to unbrand it to use the DUN. I had a unlocked Cingular Treo 650 using the T-Mobile network and used DUN just perfectly with both my Mac mini and iBook.

I find EDGE to be just speedy on the Treo, if you don't need to download or stream videos and only want what you need... email, web, streaming radio, etc. EDGE should be just dandy. I wish it is a little faster when I use DUN from my new Treo 680 to my iBook, thats when I want the speed.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I think I don't need EDGE-like internet in my phone, because I have cable home and T1 at work.
May be I'll add T-zones (only wap) for $6 later, after I'll get used to my treo.
and may be I don't even need t-zones if I'll manage to dial-up to my home modem. This suits me better, because I'd like to connect to my home computer and network remotely trough VPN or Terminal Services. Which programs should I install?

Is it better idea to update the (cingular) Treo with T-mobile ROM instead of unbranding? Or it wouldn't work? Please tell me if you have experience of doing that.
I still can't decide what to do. To leave it like it is with Cingular ROM, to unbrand to Palms ROM or to put T-mobiles ROM if it is possible. What are pros and cons of each?
    I really appreciate your advises

Cingular ROM should work fine. I don't think there is a T-Mobile ROM, since they don't support the Treo 650 (last I heard).

Yeah, no T-Mobile rom for the 650. You could try a custom ROM with original unlocked Treo firmware... I remember packin my own rom back in the day and deleting RealPlayer and dumping pTunes on there instead, might wanna give that a shot if you wanna get down and dirty with your Treo.

Hello, I am also a noob to rom upgrading. I wanted to use a 4gb card so I just gave the FAT32 update a shot. I have not done anything else to my treo yet. I have a cingular branded unlocked phone on T-mobile network.

In reference to the unbranding question, I read somewhere that you cannot go from a cingular gsm rom (1.17-CNG) to an unbranded 1.20-ENA rom.

It had something to do with the fact that 1.2 does not have certain required controls for the treo 650 that are included in older versions of the unlocked rom. So you have to upgrade to an older version first. IS THIS CORRECT?
I personally doubt this since all roms (specially from palm) would have all the necessary files.
