I set mine as realtime push with aol imap.
It drains the batt badly, even after installing the camera update for batt improvement
Approximately 5% every hour (only standby)

Yes, if you have no background apps running, the Treo will only use perhaps 1%/hr doing normal cellphone awake activities and the background stuff that Palm OS itself does.

With background apps, such as Chatter, VeriChat, etc, it has to wake up often to do work. Marc has often said he's made every effeciency in these areas to make sure it's doing as little as possible to help with battery life.

With VeriChat and Chatter together, I have 4-5%/hr consistantly. They both use around 4%, combined about the same, so that tells me that the apps themselves are not doing excessive processing etc, but rather their typical background needs with data and processing are using the battery and there's not much to be done about that.

It's normal. The 680 has a smaller battery, so the problem becomes somewhat obvious. I top my battery off during the day at work to minimize the issue, you could change to 15 minute downloads which should reduce battery usage if you don't need push email, etc..

While I love Chatter and pay to use it, I don't think any work has bee done to make it any more efficient.

i've posted several questions to the forums there and they all went ignored or deleted.

Battery Graph shows Chatter keeping the treo awake constantly, not periodically waking up to check for mail, etc.

Now that Chatter has ceased development, we'll just have to hope something better comes along.

How do you expect a background application to work? It cannot sleep and work at the same time, period. So it has to wake up. How often? That's been worked on, as evident by threads here as well as options within Chatter itself.

And as I've said a dozen times, Battery Graph + Background apps = Double drain because it's having to do double the work when it starts up.

So how do you explain Chatter using just as much battery when I have it in Offline mode? If its not actively checking mail, it shouldn't be waking up, right?

You hadn't mentioned it was in offline mode. I assume it's set to QSync on a schedule?

You're most definitely right there, it should use less battery in that mode, unless it's waking up unnecessarily. I've never used Chatter in that mode, I always have my inbox Online. I have 7-8 mailboxes in QSync on prime numbers (so they don't wind up updating at the same time) around the 6 hour mark.

Thing to do is this; DISABLE Battery Graph (it will use more battery than without) and then when the phone is idle take measurements.. At 1:30 check it, 87%... 2:30.. 85%.. etc... If you use Excel or another spreadsheet much, it's very easy to do calculations.. I have one that I used for a while to monitor my usage but I don't have it onhand, but if you want it I can attach it tomorrow.

That is FANTASTIC battery efficiency. If you are getting 20 hours you're getting almost twice as much as most people reporting here with Chatter. Most get between 12-15 hours. If I could get 20 hours I would never have filed a negative comment on this site (~sounds of background applause~)

I agree 5% / hr is pretty good battery while running Chatter IMAP push. I run 1 IMAP box and 1 Exchange box (sync every 30 minutes). I usually get 5-6% over the day. Before the camera patch, I was getting a horrible 10% / hr

I've always gotten 5% or so with Chatter and Verichat online. Camera patch was irrelevant for me since I don't use the useless camera.
