I have searched the forums and have not found my situation. I have had my VZW T650 for two years and purchased Snappermail after just the first few months thanks to recommendations from TreoCentral users. Snappermail has worked well for most of the last 18 months. Recently my outgoing mail isn't working. I still receive on both of my pop3 accounts but I get an error log when sending a message from my phone. the log shows: "authorizing SMTP, Invalid Login. Check username and password. failed to authorize to SMTP server on account. Server replied 535.5.7.0". I get this message repeatedly and the message stays in my snapper outbox. I have not changed my settings in a year. The SMTP server is smtp.vzwmail.net. My username and password are also correct. Vzw tech support said they don't support third party apps. Does anyone have an idea of how to troubleshoot this?

We had the same problem - two separate Treos. A 650 and a 700p.
Verizon was nice but not helpful. The folks at Snapper very helpful but no cure. At their suggestion, we bought a "fastmail" account. Approx $15 one time fee. www.fastmail.fm Using the Fastmail stmp all is well. Just out the 15 bucks. Good luck.

You said you're on Verizon Wireless, but what e-mail service are you using? Are you using Verizon's e-mail, or another provider? If it's another provider, who's SMTP server are you using, and do you have it set to authenticate?

    Here's the bottom line -
This is happening to several of us in NY.

We're all getting the same error message; we've not made changes to the settings on the Treo 700P.

We are using verizon's SMTP settings and our own work related IMAP settings.

Getting email through our work based IMAP system is not a problem.
Sending email through Verizon's SMTP system does not work using Palm OS devices. It is working on Treo 700W devices.

Error message = "Authorizing SMTP Invalid Login. Check Username and passsword. Failed to authorize to SMTP server on account XXXX. Server replied 535.5.7.0 Authentication failed."

There is nothing we can do this is a verizon problem and I am amazed that Verizon does not know about this and has not posted anything on their website.

    Anyone else with this issue?

Are your SMTP settings set for authentication for SMTP? It's possible that Verizon didn't use to require authentication, then changed their system so now they do. I worked for several ISP's when I got out of college and I'd see this all the time, especially with SMTP issues.

This went out from SnapperMail support this morning:

This is a call out to all Verizon Wireless users, specifically
if you also have ChatterEmail loaded on your handheld device.

Verizon appears to have recently made a change to their SMTP
servers. Unfortunately, the change interferes with
SnapperMail's regular normal operation for SMTP using their
server. VersaMail still works, which is puzzling. Since
VersaMail works and it's the only program they support,
Verizon is saying the issue is with SnapperMail. This even
though our software is completely RFC compliant, and we have
made no changes within the recent past weekend (which is
when the problem started). Our engineer is looking into the
problem on our end to see if we can work around it.

VersaMail has no diagnostic log feature that we know of or
can find, but Chatter does. So, we're trying to find a
workaround for Verizon's server problems, and it would be
helpful to see what type of authentication Chatter is using.

If you have Verizon Wireless cellular service and also have
ChatterEmail installed on your handheld, it would be very
helpful to us if you could generate a diagnostic log with it.
Please send a message from ChatterEmail using the Verizon
Wireless server, and then send us the ChatterEmail diagnostic
    log to our support@snappermail.com address.

For reference, SnapperMail diagnostic log instructions
    are here -

    http://www.snappermail.com/support/#12

They're only for reference, as we need the log from ChatterEmail,
not SnapperMail. Unfortunately, we don't have the diagnostic
    log instructions for ChatterEmail.

Here are the Verizon Wireless SMTP server settings -

That's interesting, VersaMail can authenticate but Snapper can't. Hmmm...

Thanks Bill for the info on Snapper support. I am relieved to know that this problem wasn't my imagination. Please let us know if an answer is discovered.

I do have other email accounts that have their own SMTP server but I seem to remember they didn't work on the VZW network. Can you use other SMTP servers on VZW?

Here's what I found on VZW's FAQ page.

Why can't I send email through my existing ISP mail account?

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) do not allow their customers to send email from other networks such as Verizon Wireless' NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess services. To accommodate Verizon Wireless customers who have email accounts that do not allow relaying, Verizon Wireless has implemented an outbound SMTP mail server for you to be able to send your email.

To utilize SMTP you will need to do the following:

    1. Change your Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.vzwmail.net. The steps to change the Outgoing Mail Settings will vary by email client. Please refer to your email client provider for instructions on how to change the setting.

    2. Create a VText.com profile if you do not already have a Verizon Wireless VText.com profile. Visit www.vtext.com from your PC to register for free. A TXT Messaging capable data device or phone is required.
    * The credentials to access the send mail server will be the 10-digit mobile number (used on VText.com) @vzwmail.net (i.e. 2025551212@vzwmail.net) for the user name. For the password use the password established on www.vtext.com.

    * NOTE: Credentials established on www.vtext.com may take up to 48 hours before they will work on the Verizon Wireless SMTP server. If your password works on www.vtext.com but not on the smtp.vzwmail.net server, try again in a couple hours.

The Verizon Wireless SMTP server can be accessed from most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) eliminating the need to reconfigure settings when switching between Verizon Wireless and other networks.
So they don't allow SMTP relaying, you have to use Verizon's SMTP server. The question now, is do you need to authenticate with login credentials, or does it authenticate by IP address? I couldn't find the answer to that, but I don't have VZW and I'm familiar with their policies.

I have the same Snapper Mail problem and have been told by them that they are puzzled by the problem. They have usually been helpful and quick. Is there another email solution for Palm/Mac users that I can investigate? And, if so, are there multiple options? I am not comfortable with downtime and 4 days is a lot. Thanks

I have two SMTP accounts from other ISPs. I tried both of them on my phone USING SERVER IDENTIFICATION. One worked and one did not, so my problem is solved. If you don't have an SMTP account, just follow the advice from BennetM in post two of this thread.

Others are reporting that the problem seems to be solved. Is not working again for you?

Actually, I have removed the VZW smtp from my phone. Thanks to this thread I learned that I didn't need it. I always felt that outgoing server was slow anyways, so I won't use VZW anymore. If it works for most people, I am sure it is fixed for me, but I don't want to use it any longer. Thanks Bill.

I have the same problem. Anyone try Agendus mail or Aileron as mail program to avoid the Verizon problem?

I got the verizon to work by creating a new account and starting over.

Once it sent an email the old account sent the emails as well. I think it was probably the wait for the password to change issue and suddenly it worked.

just thought I'd pass on just in case someone else wants to try and create a new account with the exact same settings it made snapper and vzwmail play nice.
