My Malaysian colleague have recently bought 2 units of Treo 680 for me and himself from a Palm OS shop in LA. This was with advice from another colleague who have bought a unit a month ago at USD399 from SFO Airport. We bought it at the same price too.

The difference was that his unit was without the "Cingular" word on his unit in which I believe that it is an ISP in US. We now have problem of unlocking the phone using our local ISP.

    My questions are as follows.
    1. Why an unlocked unit was not offerred to him? He is not very savvy in this matter and thus, did not know what questions to ask. However, he was made clera to him by the salesperson that he has every intention to use it in Malaysia.
    2. How do I unlock the Palm Treo 680 Cingular "co-branded phone"phone? I am really caught in a bind now. There is any solutions found in the internet however, I do not if I should trust them.

To be exact, after I put in my local ISP simcard, it prompted me to key in my PIN. I tried 2 times carefully but it did not work.

Would be much obliged if you could advise and provide a feasible solution to this.

    Thanks.

It doesn't sound like your phone is locked. What you are being asked for is a PUK, a PIN Unlocking Key; you'll need to contact the carrier whose SIM that is, and request the PUK.

Why not you try on another local ISP sim card that does not require PIN?

If you put a non-Cingular sim into a Cingular branded Palm Treo, it will ask you for the unlock code for the phone. That is what happened when I put my Tmobile SIM into a Cingular Treo 750. That code can either be acquired directly from Cingular (one of the major cell phone providers in the US, now call AT&T) and requires a Cingular account, or you can purchase an unlock code from any one of a number of internet services. I unlocked my Treo 750 from a company called GSM PhoneSource (http://www.gsmphonesource.com/) for $25. They provided the unlock code and instructions on how to do it. No need to send the phone in.

As for your associate purchasing a Cingular phone from a Palm store, I would suspect an error on someone's part, since it would have required him to purchase a cell phone plan, or pay much more for the phone. I don't believe that Palm stores carry any branded Treo's only the unbranded ones that are unlocked. Anyway, it is possible to use a Cingular branded phone in Malaysia, Cingular does offer those plans but the cost would be very expensive. That is why they offer the unlocking service to their customers who travel internationally. That gives them the option of using a local cell phone provider.

    ivhs72,

I think you raise some good and valid points. The Palm Shop does not sell Cingular branded phones - may be very true! That it is unthinkable that they do. Perhaps these phones are purchased wz a contract at USD199.

Am in touch wz the unlocker contact u gave me. He/she mentioned that the 680 may need a few steps to unlock it as opposed to your 750.

I dunno but I see a lot in the market offering these services. Some charging USD19.99 to USD35. What are the differences?

Much obliged you are able to shed some light.

To clear some of your comments:

    a. There is no different between USD19.99 to USD35 unlock service. Just ask for 8 digits unlock code, put it into your locked phone and that's all about. The point is s/o try to make more money out of the service, hence, s/he tries to make it sound complicated. Normally, ppl w/Cingular services get unlock code for free, of course, you might have the clue of what you want; otherwise, Cingular's rep are also trying to fool you around, too. There is a long thread about unlocking Treo 650 in this forum.

    b. The treo 680 and 650 GSM are not strongly controlled by service providers as others Treo (aka 650 CDMA, 700p, 700w, 700wx, or 750) Therefore, nothing relates to SMS, MMS, and ISP config. Just pop in the local SIM card, turn on the radio, Treo will auto re-config base on the SIM pre-set info and then you good to go. I don't have any issue when I travel around w/ my unlocked Cingular Treo 680.

    c. On the Treo face plate, if you don't see any brand except Treo, Palm; then the chance of getting unlock (international version) is 95%. If your IMEI # doesn't start with 0110xxxxxxxx; it is definately NOT a Cingular Treo 680.

If he purchased an unlocked unbranded Treo from Palm (like mine is), it should already be unlocked for any service anywhere. He shouldn't need an unlock code for a phone that is already unlocked.

treoluv, do u mean Cingular actually has the unlock code? Why are being so reservedly shy of giving me the unlock code when I called them?

    This is really crazy!

As i told you guys on the previous post!

Yes. Cingular have the software which generate the subsidy unlock code every single phone that sales under their name. Many CS rep try to play dumb about the subsidy by telling you that:
    a. they have to get subsidy unlock code from manufactures, it take 3-5 business day and they will email to you.
    b. or you're in the contract so they can't provide the unlock code,
    c. or giving a PIN code, PUK code, blah blah

I get more than 30 subsidy unlock codes (from Moto, Sony Ericcson, Blackberry to Palm Treo) from CS rep!!!

Just be patient and STRAIGHT FORWARD when asking for the subsidy unlock code. If you found the rep play dumb, hang up, call later, you might get the nicer rep. Here some info you might want to know http://mytreo.net/forum/index.php/topic,33146.0.html

    Good luck.

Just confirmed that Palm Shop did indeed sell these Cingular phones.

Ok, I will give them h3ll should they not give me the subsidy unlock code. BTW, I was made to understand the Patent Office has given thumbs up for these unlock codes.

    Luck taken. Thanks. Will FR.

I would give the h3ll for selling a phone that is essentially useless to you, since Cingular doesn't offer service in your part of the world. For that reason alone they owe you an unlock code. And yes, providers do have to provide unlock codes on request for accounts in good standing. I have done it a couple of times with Tmobile. They hem and haw and it takes a few days, but they do eventually cough it up.

gsmphonesource is taking quite a while... 24 hours turnaround... well... 2 more hours to go!
  14. #14
I dont claim a 24hr turnaround. I advertise that if I receive your order by 6pm PST that you will have the unlock code that night
  15.    #15
Well, I still have not receive anything as yet. It's been like 40+ hours now.

The credit card company confirmed the deduction as well on 2nd May... duh.
  17.    #17
Apparently I sent a 16 digit IMEI code number. They refunded.
