    TreoMsgr v1.0b1

TreoMsgr is a Treo Messaging Scheduler. Schedule messages for delivery at a particular date and time. Yes, this is a scheduler the way it is meant to be!

    Release Notes:
    • Small size (< 20 KB)
    • Uses the inbuilt Tasks (ToDo) database. (Sending messages is a "task", right?).
    • Use all of Tasks features, especially the complex "repeat" functionality to schedule messages.
    Instructions:
    • Install TreoMsgr
    • Enable TreoMsgr in the Preferences Panel
    • Press Done. TreoMsgr is enabled.
    • Launch Tasks.
    • Make a new Category named "TreoMsgr" (only tasks in this category will be used).
    • In the description enter the phone number (no validity check is done on the phone number).
    • In the Note field, enter the message text between <tm> and </tm> tags. Remember messages need to be less than 160 characters. You should use a utility like ShortCut5 to make entry of these tags simpler, as entering the "<" or ">" characters is not that easy.
    Notes:

TreoMsgr will recognise and schedule only the following tasks:
    • Tasks in category "TreoMsgr"
    • Having a valid date and time in the future.
    • Has a phone number in the description field. You can enter any other text if you want, but a number is mandatory.
    • Has a valid note within the <tm> and </tm> tags.
    • The "Alarm: _ days earlier" is ignored.
    • Tasks must be edited with the inbuilt Tasks application for everything to work as expected. Support for 2day in next release.

    Updated to v1.0b2

Please see v1.1 in Post #6 below

Sorry, are you talking about the Built-in Task application of the Treo?

I have T680 and cannot do what you do with Tasks as you said below :
    Tasks in category "TreoMsgr"
Having a valid date and time in the future.
Has a number in the description field.

Cannot find how to add a time to a task or where is the description field.

The description is the text for the task itself; tap "New" and start typing.
Then, while the cursor is in the description field, tap "Details": tap the drop-down next to "Due Date" to select a date. You'll then see the Alarm dialog: tap "None" and enter the alarm time.
    V > Vx > m505 > m515 > T/T > T3 > TC > 650 > 680

That's right... as for the Category, you can tap whatever category that is displayed in the task edit form to pop-up the category list, there you will find "Edit Categories..."

    v1.1 Release

    Notes:
    • Clean-up and release.
    • Better error handling.
    • IMPORTANT CHANGE: Enter phone number in Description between '<' and '>" tags. You can enter any other text outside these tags, and these will be ignored. No validity check is done on the number.
    • If the message is successfully sent, the item will be marked (by TreoMsgr) as completed for non-repeating events, OR will advance to the next due date for repeating events. This will not be done if the messaging fails for any reason.

    GreenHex,
How about the ability to create a list of numbers in the main program with the ability to name the list, i.e. "Soccer Team". Kinda like a phone tree. It would be great if you could lookup and paste the numbers too. This would allow the user to not have to manually enter the numbers every time. This would be great for sports teams. You could send a reminder for practice to the entire team.

Mmmm... need to think about how to implement this. This is like an alias for multiple numbers.

But how are multiple numbers in SMS address usually handled? Is there a maximum limit to the number of phone numbers? Are multiple numbers handled by the phone, i.e., by sending individual messages, or at the server end?

Somebody more knowledgeable than me can give some inputs so as to get me thinking...

PS: BTW, you can lookup and paste numbers into the description by using Menu->Options->Phone Lookup, while in Tasks. Only you need to add the < and > tags to delimit the number. You can let any other text (name of the individual, possibly) be as it is, or even add some of your own descriptive text outside the tags.

Maybe he means he wants to create a group (as in Outlook) like:
    Soccer Team...
All the the team members would automatically be CC'ed the SMS all would go out to all.
    As I said above maybe.

Yeah... I guessed as much. I need to figure out how to implement this... as, now TreoMsgr needs to handle 1 to any number of delivery numbers, i.e. now requires major rewrite of some parts of it.

I am attempting to use this on my Sprint 700p. All I am getting when I access the program from the preferances panel is a request for a registration code. There is no means presented for me to enable the program.

Any other 700p users having this problem? You should have at least 14 days of trial on fresh installation.

    Bill,
    Thanks for the reply.

Using treo's built-in Task app. I did exactly the above, and I entered the fields as follows:
    In description: phone number
    Due date: Today
    Repeat: None
    Category: TreoMsgr
    Note: a short text
Alarm: time I want the sms to be sent
However at due time, Treo 680 gives an alarm, but no sms is sent

PS: I do not find the tags as GreenHex described below
Has a valid note within the <tm> and </tm> tags.

    John,

You need to enter the text in the Task Note as shown below in the next line.

    <tm>Happy Birthday!</tm>

To enter the "<" character, you should do the following:
    1. Press "Option" Key (see extreme left, third row from the top, below "A", the solid coloured button)
    2. Press "Y" to enter the "(" character.
    3. Press "Alt" Key (next to space bar, at the right).
    4. Scroll below one, and press "Select" (5-way center).
To enter the ">" character, you need to repeat the same procedure above, but use the ")" character instead of "(".

The "/" character is entered by pressing "Option" and "Q".

All this is complicated and time-consuming, so you can use ShortCut5 (it's freeware, not written by me) to enter all of the above in one go, without involving so many steps.

    - mvk

PS: In case you are using v1.1, then you need to enclose the number between "<" and ">" tags... like this <0123456789> in the description field.

The maximum at a time is 10 and they appear as numbers separated by commas if you do it manually. I think that multiple messages are sent.

I have a nice little app called TSC which offers one to use the built-in Shortcut app.

There is also on called TCB which is for the command bar.

ShortCut5 is nice and appears to be a very handy plug, but it does what the built-in shortcuts offers.

Both above mentioned are made by a company called: RNS..
If memory serves correctly, I think there is a very small price tag on them though.

Yeah you can use TSC too. (TSC is TreoShortCuts from RNS::, and you will need to install the Palm Shortcuts (search T|C) to edit and define your own shortcuts and expansions. This app does not come bundled with the Treo).

Did you try a hard reset? Backup your data first... - mvk
