    Just curious.... We obviously haven't gotten a Palm ROM update yet (ever? 700 folks? ) but I'm kind of surprised people haven't been doing custom ROMs, removing the silliness like the neutered Help system, Get Good, removing the old built-in Pocket Tunes, etc..

    Bootloader is completely different than the 650. I think we will have to wait for the first updater.
    PalmIII > PalmIIIx > PalmIIIxe > TRGPro > Handera 330 > Zire71 > Treo600 > Treo650 > Treo680 > Treo750 > Centro > TreoPro > iPhone 32GB 3GS

    Also, I think one of the motivating factors in messing with the 650 ROM was write apps to ROM, thus leaving more space in RAM. The 680 has much more RAM than the 650, thus creating less of an incentive to modify the ROM.

    Getting rid of the "junk" would be all I need...

    I want to remove lots. hopefully help speed up the reboot.

    Wow, would an emptier ROM really speed up reboot? That would be pretty neat.

    The conspiracy theorist in me also tells my why this is probably the reason why Palm has yet to release a rom update for the 700p as well...that is to prevent custom roms from appearing?

    I would love to run the Phone app from the 650 on the 680. it was so much better, faster and simpler. anyone know how?

    You can use the 650 phone app on the 680.

    A while back someone posted some versions of the Phone App with custom start/shutdown screens. Put one of those on and you will have the old phone app again.

    I don't think that's what he was looking for...

    Yep. My theory on roms is that Palm knows that if they release one, they will open the world to custom roms and dead Treos. If they release a new device, we'll all ebay ours and buy the next version!
    Palm III -> Palm V -> Blue Palm Vx w/Omnisky -> Treo 270 -> Treo 600 -> Treo 650 -> Treo 680

    Yeah, why encourage users to update to fix the faults on a device when Palm (or, more often, the wireless company they're tied to) would prefer you to simply buy the next model up?

    Besides, Palm / ACCESS is simply treading water until they get sold (again) and they can dump any premise towards support of the PalmOS in favour of Linux or Symbian. Why spend time tinkering with a OS if you have no intention of using it in the future - all Palm wants to be is a smartphone hardware provider to wireless companies.

    We Palm users are destined to become like Psion and Newton hobbyists....

    May be it's time for a custom rom?

    because it's one of the best way to maintain the Treo brand as one of the most stable and smart. and the brand is a strong part of the business.

    Yep, I'm waiting on a custom rom.. I think I'll start a new thread on it specifically.
