Every now and then I wait a few seconds, at a maximum of maybe 10, but generally from 0 lag to a second or two of it. Meanwhile, I have 54 apps on my Treo, including Fieldplus, PalmRevolt, and Fontsmoother, which constantly run in the background, and Chatter and Mundu, which are running in the background 95% of the time, so not everyone who isn't having slowdown has no third-party apps installed. I'll be the first to admit that my Treo 600 felt slightly snappier in opening programs, (as apparently the 650 did as well), but its been rare occasions that I've sat there and been frustrated at the slowness. Besides that, the convenience of non-volatile memory (ie not having to worry about my battery dying), increased resolution, and most importantly, EVDO speeds more than make up for any slight lag I notice in opening programs.

I even had two different phones, my first one randomly died, so I was given a new one under the warranty, and have noticed absolutely no differences in speed between the two.

The only slowness that really bugs me is how the 700p takes probably 5 times the amount of time to reboot after a soft reset, between the Palm screen, Access screen, Palm screen again, Sprint splash screen, and connecting to PowerVision. After a soft reset the 600 would be almost instantaneously ready. (I know, a caveat of NVFS, but honestly, my Vista PC boots faster.)

I've said this before, that sure I want the update, but I don't really see the phone to be deeply flawed as some here do. There's absolutely nothing that I want to do on my Treo that I find I'm unable to because of app-loading constraints. (Well, okay, a few games I like don't run in LJP, and there's not enough buttons for emulating SNES well, but besides that ).

(Also, what'd be really nice is if the update allows for custom ROMS like the 650, I wouldn't mind getting rid of all the junk thats installed on there, and updating Docs to Go and pTunes to their newest versions in the ROM.)

Sure, a faster processor, and getting rid of even those few second lags would be desired for me in the next Treo I buy, but its not really a deal-breaker in this one. (Actually, what needs drastic improvement is the SD slot read/write speed and the USB transfer speed, hopefully those will be better in the future as well.)

Wow, a happy user thread. I don't post often, but wanted to add my positive input here too, hehe.

700P owner for just about a year. Moved up from the 650. Honestly, I could not be happier with the device. Lag is VERY minimal, and only seen when exiting Blazer. (I have it set to clear everything on exit, so it's expected). NO bluetooth issues ever with a Jabra BT 250 headset. Last but not least; In nearly a year, I think I have had MAYBE 2 resets on the device. My 650? Try 2-3 per day, LOL.

Anywho, I'm quite happy with the 700P, and frankly, won't give it up for at least another year when I can get the next device along with a nice discout from Sprint.

Another happy 700p user here. Its not perfect but it is the best EVDO phone out there. I love being able to tether my laptop when traveling. Its a great phone.

I guess I am part of the silent majority :-)

Gee, that's great. Can I have some of that Kool-Aid? :-) Maybe if I pour it on my 700p it will launch an OTA ROM update.

Wondered how long it would take.....

    I am also a happy 700p user

happy users ARE the silent majority, if others are so unhappy with their Treos, then why do they keep buying them?

I upgraded from a Treo650. the constant resets on th 650 were annoying, but i still loved that phone, and I love my 700p even more! yes, it has a couple quirks, but what smartphone doesn't? my 700p has not reset even once since I've had it (my 650 used to reset at least once a day).

the only issue I ever have with the 700p is an occasional lag while leaving blazer, but even that is a very minor issue, certainly nothing to get upset about.

I say this to anybody who hates their treo: sell it on eBay and go but yourself a WM5 phone, then again you'll probably hate that too. after all WM phones have just as many issues, just different ones.

I had 2 WM5 phones before I switched to Palm. (Samsung i730 and the UTStarcom XV6700), they were both cool phones but I'll take a treo over either one any day. If I ever switch back to a WM phone, it will be a Treo model

    Just my 2

I'm curious how many of the happy 700p users have VZW and how many Sprint?
Does the carrier make a difference?
  10. #30
I've got Sprint; cheaper, works great in my area, and I get almost 20% off each bill because of a workplace deal with Sprint/Nextel. I'm sure the SMS freezing being restricted to Verizon will have something to do with relative positivity, but in general, other than that issue, I don't see a difference in complaints.

Sprint here;been with them for a very long time and can't get a deal like I have for data and minutes anywhere else. Besides, they have been extremely reliable in my area.

Sprint. But I will dump them soon for my business line.
  13. #33
    Sprint here as well.

I am about 90% happy. I've had some weird resets, and even 2 instances where I had to hard reset, but that was after I really started tweaking to get better performance using Dbcache and Resco locker. I have since gotten rid of both of them and am back to stable.

The lag is slightly annoying, but nothing I can't live with. Hopefully the update will fix the issues. I purposely have avoided getting a bluetooth headset until those issues are resolved.

I have a VZW 700p and it works fine. Like other posters I'm 90% satisfied and believe the unit needs an update. BTW I paid almost full price and bought the device directly from Palm when it first came out (if it makes a difference for stability.)

I don't have that much of a lag. The device seldom resets on me unless I surf all day/night long with Blazer. In fact, I usually could predict when my device would reset: when the "Max alloc" hovers around 3MB in DBCacheTool (a freeware - and I didn't use its auto-clear feature). I noticed that when I went in and out of Blazer a lot, the "Max alloc" drops fast. Sometimes a "lag" would come up (i.e. the white screen) when the "Max alloc" drops to this "danger zone" and about 50% of the time after the white screen the unit would be back to snappy and the "Max alloc" would come back to around 5 to 6MB which is the "safe zone". (Of course, the other 50% of the time the device would reset.) So it seems that PalmOS was trying to recoup the DBCache. The device resets when it failed to. Blazer isn't cleaning up DBCache timely and/or correctly. Well, these are my observations and I don't have any technical proofs.

My BT headset (Moto H700 Rev B) works most of the time. Sometimes it does drop out when idle but would re-connect by itself - i.e. no need to re-pair. I never got disconnected while talking.

I seldom use SMS/MMS. So I cannot comment here.

Email: I had been a long-time Chatter user since the days of Treo 650. Until about a couple of months ago I swithced back to VersaMail with EAS (Exchange Active-Sync). I'm a heavy email user and I haven't noticed any performance or stability issues for either Chatter or VersaMail. FWIW: Exchange emails, calendars, and contacts are pushed to VM real-time. I access my GMail account and poll it every 15 mins.

I am now a happy Sprint 700p user. My first 700p froze all the time especially when any app kept the EVDO connection open. Naturally I was told for 5 months to hard reset and not run 3rd party apps.

Good thing whatever bug 700p #1 had caused it to not boot up anymore. 700p #2 hasn't frozen in a week and has crashed twice.

Maybe it isn't a software issue as much as a hardware/quality control problem.

Sprint here, and am a happy camper. I just got back from a family vacation. Today's my first day back in the office, and I'm already caught up thanks to having the treo with me on vacation. Plus, it entertained the kids (and me) during down-time, allowed us to research things using Blazer, and with TomTom and DA did an amazing job of getting us around a city in which we've never been, not to mention to/from the city itself.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably be joining the 700p club in a month.

Well, in a month you should probably be joining the 755p club.

Nope, figure the 755p will be buggy and expensive.
700p will be marked down and with rebates, will be dirt cheap.
Besides, besides cosmetics, how different will the 755p be from the 700p?
I don't want to spend more money on new memory cards or cases. I'm basically moving from a 650 to the 700p for EVDO.
Maybe I'll get lucky and Palm will have that miracle patch out for the 700p by mid May?

Happy 700p owner since 5/15/07 Got it free from Sprint's Insurance.
