There has been a great deal of whining, not to say, weeping and gnashing of teeth, on TC about the lack of A2DP support (stereo sound over BT) for Palm products. For the most part it has been a moot point. There have been few enough headsets to exploit it.

This morning I received an e-mail from the Palm Store offering to sell me AGConnect for US$17-. AGConnect provides A2DP for Palm OS. That's right, sports fans, for Palm OS. This does not mean that it will work on any Palm device but all that have BT.

From receipt of the e-mail to up and running was about 15 minutes. I even glanced at the well done documentation. However, if you are familiar with BT pairing, your intuition will not lead you astray.

I am using it on my 650 with a Plantronics 590 headset. The sound quality is excellent. (The 590 comes with a dongle that will plug into the stereo adapter for the Treo but it is one more battery to charge and thing to lose.)

The down-side is that it is very distance sensitive. If the Treo is held at arms length, the headset will lose signal. This is more likely a hardware limitation than a software problem. However, I have not had a similar problem when using the headset with the Palm for mono phone calls.

Just a word about the Plantronics 590 Headset. I bought it for the great sound quality but learned to love not having a wire. It is fairly smart. If I am using it with my iPod and my Treo and a call comes in, it will drop the iPod and connect to the Treo, when the Treo disconnects from the phone call, it automagically goes back to the iPod. Do not know whether this will work with AGConnect.

Just foung another glitch. The Treo locked up and had to be reset. When I turned it back on, I started Real Player expecting it to reconnect to the h/s. No such luck. Then I went back to AGConnect and flipped the only control, toggle from headset to internal speaker; no joy. Then I went to Prefs BT. It did not see the 590 as a nearby. Went to "all known devices," saw it and chose it. I was prompted for the pairing code. Went back to Real Player. No Joy. The necessary sequence seems to be turn on both Treo and headset, go to prefs BT and pair, go to AGConnect, choose the h/s and then start Real Player. If I discover a shorter sequence, I will let you know.

The net is that with a little familiarity, I am glad I spent the $17-.

It is an adventure for the Treo community in trying out all the possible combinations of SAG, various Treo's and various headsets and music and phone functionality.

Check out Softick's forum for some discussion as well:
