To Flash a Treo 650 ROM to an older ROM image using a PC you need 6 things.
Most of which I included in this post.

    1. A hot sync cable with a hot sync button. http://www.gsm-support.net/shop/pic/...50-usb_mid.jpg

    2. The Treo 650 RomTool boot loader driver. http://grack.com/downloads/misc/treo/RomTool.zip
    3. The ROM tool Program. http://grack.com/downloads/misc/treo/RomTool.exeThis file is the same as above but it's an all in one package that loads the driver and the software. you can skip this download if you like and just use The ROM tool.EXE in #2.

    4. A Clear understanding of how to do a hard reset.
this option will restore your Trio to its factory default state granted you did not already install a custom ROM. In the case you did it will simply revert back to how your system was when you first installed the Custom ROM.
(Warning!) Before you do a hard reset you should always do a Hot sync first!

Hold down the red (On/off) button.http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...N_powerend.gif
Then hit the soft reset button 1 time while still holding the red (On/off) buttonhttp://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...N_powerend.gif
    http://www.reset-verizonwireless-pda...ylus_reset.gif
Continue holding the red (On/off) http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...N_powerend.gif
Button till you see this screen.
    http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...eredcircle.gif
Now you will see a screen like this.
    http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...7_eraseall.gif
Push up on the 5 way navigator to choose yes to delete all data in your Treo’s RAM
    http://www.oreillynet.com/wireless/2...cs/5wayNav.jpg
The system will reboot and the next screen you will see is this.
    http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...ouchscreen.gif
recalibrate and you are back up and running.

    5. A Clear understanding of how to get to the Trio Boot Load screen..
Hold down the soft reset button “don’t release it”.
    http://www.reset-verizonwireless-pda...ylus_reset.gif

While still holding it down hit the Hotsync button and hold it. “don’t release it”
    http://www.palm.com/us/images/suppor...28_hotsync.gif
Now release the soft reset button Followed by releasing the Hotsink button. And you should see this Screen

    6. An Old TREO 650 ROM Image. Sorry but you will have to ask around for this since its palms intellectual property. I’m sure if you ask somebody in the forums for the one you need they will be more than happy to help you out.

    Now let’s get started.

1st do a hot sync. “If you don’t know how to do this you should not be doing any of this”

2nd install the Treo 650 driver

3ed access the boot loader screen. This is just a test to make sure it works. make sure your Hotsync cable is pluged into the treo and the pc USB port

4th. if you got to the Boot loader screen then the Next step is to do a Soft reset followed by a hard Reset. Or to save time just do a Hard reset. See #4 above

5th. Access the boot loader Screen. See #5 above for Instructions.

6th. Double click Romtool.exe and wait for the boot Loader to finish loading via the green status bar. Then look at your Treo. it should say Treo 650 Rom Tool when its done

7th.. Backing up your Treos ROM image. Go to the Download ROM Tab and select directory then choose an output directory by clicking the brows button.
Note: make sure your Directory is a newly created folder that’s empty. Id call it "My Treo 650's Original Rom Image" with its ROM number but that's up to you. After you get past this hit download and wait till It’s complete. When it does complete make a copy of the newly created folder and its contents. "I also recommend burning the original to a CD in the near future B4 something happens to it.

8th. Uploading the older ROM image.
1st Hit the “Upload Rom” tab in the TREO Tool application.

2nd Where it says ROM Source hit Select and choose the kind of ROM file you have. Example: If it’s a ZIP file Choose Zip.

3ed. Hit Brows to locate the file you want to upload to the Treo.

4th. After you select the file you want & it’s finished checking the file size and compressing the file go ahead and hit upload. This will take a few minutes.

5th when it is done do a soft reset.. your ready to rock and roll

Also, why not simply backup the existing ROM before doing anything else? That we he can restore back to that if everything goes "wonky" - which is very unlikely, of course.

I hope I am not simply adding confusion into the mix!

    For several reasons.
One is because if theirs a conflict with the older OS itís the data in Ram that makes the Treo go into a continuous loop. Another reason is that you need at least 15MB free and the main reason is because the point of this thread is to get the wi-fi drivers working. We want to start off with a system thatís as clean as possible so that we can track down the file or files that are taking over the network library easier.

I see what you mean now. I actually made him do 2 hard resets. No harm done but one is enough. its fixed now. thank you for pointing that out.

Fair enough. I don't know why you need 15MB free, but having a clean system to work with to get the drivers working makes a lot of sense.

Update. Despite my better judgment I went out and got the Palm Wi-fi Card. So I will be running tests on it using 2 Cingular Treo 650s. I’m not exactly the most skilled computer programmer but for what its worth I do have some electronic engineering under my belt and I’m no stranger to Basic Programming principals. Just wish me luck because if I can pull this off we all win. Stay tuned...

Okay I got a connection using the 1b.17-cng ROM but the system is all screwed up. it wants to do a continuous reboot but I put a quick end to that with safe mode however, if I try to access the Palm desktop AKA the apps page it will go into a continuous reboot mode again so I am going in thru the phone and using the "my favorites keys" to move around. The good news is I got a connection and it found my network. thank god I loaded Resco explorer in my Rom because now I have access to that as well as my SD card if need be. Basically everything I need is working & things are looking bright.

PS.. The phone is out. Everything but wi fi is out of order so my guess is it’s a single file that needs to be removed. Its probably been replaced with one by the driver so all I need to do now is find what file it is and replace it. This will be easy since I have two Treos. I honestly think i can handle this.

OMG this is too easy! I was able to restore the network without a hard reset But the phone is resetting allot. Give me a day or two and ill have this thing licked. B4 the month is out I hope to have wi-fi working at 100%. if nothing else I will have a practical solution within a few days or maybe a couple of hours.

Okay I’m trying the 1.15 ROM and my results have not been so good. For starters if you try to put the phone in sleep mode using power saving or manually by hitting the red power button it will reset and the only fix I have at the moment is a program called always on. Also when I tried to connect to the router it dies the second it gets a connection. I had better results with the 1.17 ROM even if I could not boot up normally. At least with the 1b.17s ROM I was able to connect and obtain an IP & DNS address. As things stand I can already tell I need to fire up a hex editor. Any input would be helpful from you who have spent time working with this. Just chime in and let me know about actions you observed with various ROMs.

To sum it all up. I know how to get the driver out of the Treo without having to do a Hard reset to restore the network & i have it running fairly stable on the 1.15 ROM but the card cuts the link the second it connects. Now since its been reported to work with the 1.15 ROm I would really be interested to know how this was pulled off.

Closer and closer, and yet the holy grail of the Treo 650 still eludes us.

    See also http://www.palmpowerups.com/modules....iewtopic&t=360

Dmitry is running a business, but, still, maybe he'd be willing to collaborate.

After all, a working ROM modification could conceivably lead to a stand-alone solution he could market.

i got the treo to find and connect to networks just fine with any firmware, the problem is the connection breaks as soon as it is established (a second or two after). There are people who claim that with earlier firmwares they were able to use the card fully. If anyone can back this claim up and send ma a backup of such a rom i should be able to make a working driver set without much problems.

Have you tried getting in touch with shadowmite over at shadowmite.com who did the original work on this effort?
