Hi guys, I have done a search and looked around but cannot find a thread covering my problem.

I am going to Germany and hiring a car and was intending to take my 650 with Tomtom Navigator 5. I need to buy or download the maps for Germany.

I am not very technical. Can someone explain how I can use an SD card with the German maps on if, as I believe, I need the Tomtom SD card anyway?
Or is tomtom in the Treo and tis only UK maps on the card?

Don't all shout at silly woman asking daft questions, please.

    Thank you for your help.

I assume you already own Nav 5 with maps from somewhere. If so, you should be able to purchase the Germany maps from the Tomtom Site and then add them to your existing card that has the Nav 5 program. You may have to remove something to make space for them but it just depends on what you already have loaded. Memory card sizes

do you have a dedicated (original) tomtom SD or do you use and SD you use for other purposes too?

You can have both maps on the same SD as long as it is big enough.
legally you need to buy them but I've seen them float around on the net too (illegal off course).

If you get a dedicated German tomtom SD you can use that withouth needing your UK one (providing it has the program on that SD too or you have it on your treo's main memmoory)

    Going anywhere fun in Germany?
Remember to slow down at roadwork area's and only go fast in the 'unlimited' sections of the autobahn, the other sections are enforced...

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

If I have to do that, then I am afraid I don't know how. Can anyone help with that.
Foolproof one syllable instructions? I would be very grateful.

    Thank you for replying.
I use the Tom tom card but do not know if the card holds the complete program or just the maps. If I knew the latter was the case then I could just swap the sd card over for the German maps.
I was going to buy it off Tom Tom. How can I find out if the prog is on the phone or the card? apologies if this is a stupid question.

I am going to a Discworld Convention in a castle (Terry Pratchett books) in Freusburg at the end of Feb. http://www.discworld-convention.de/ If you are interested. I was just in Arizona over Christmas and loved driving there.
Thanks for the heads-up on the roads!

    I have a similar (?) problem...

I have the Western US maps loaded and have the Florida maps on my PC. I'd like to move the Florida maps onto the SD card manually but no matter what I do, TomTom 5 won't find them. After I load them onto the card, I go into Switch Maps and TT does not find the Florida maps, only the West maps. Right now the West maps are in a folder named west_maps. I tried placing the Florida maps in florida-maps, maps\florida, southern_maps, florida-maps, etc but nothing seems to work.

For me, Florida maps would be in a folder named Florida-Map in the root directory of the SD card. I've done this with many different regions but I've always left my original maps (CA-NV) on the card as well. I created the various map folders on my PC from the Tomtom install CDs.

The Tomtom site has some instructions for this but they are a bit daunting. Can you tell us some more about your existing SD card? What's it's capacity and have you put anything on it other than what Tomtom had on it originally?
    Installing Maps
This appears to be a general answer for many Tomtom devices but there is some information specific to SD cards at the end.
