I really like the 650 layout.. It makes perfect sense to me. Especially the Home button being moved to the opposite side of the keyboard and the Menu button going all the way to the bottom of the keyboard, neither makes any sense to me and will drive me crazy.

Will LudusP (or anything else) let me reorganize the keyboard where the upper-right "Red" key is Menu, the upper-left "Green" key is Home? I never use the right-shift key so that one doesn't really bug me.

I wonder how one would hang up on a call.. But that's something I'd figure out I guess.

I'm late getting into the game, I've been keeping up with the 650 news, and a little 680 recently.. Missed the whole "keyboard completely changed with the 700p" thing. I've searched around, but didn't see anything.

I've just installed Ludus P for just that reason. So, far, so good.

I'm using LudusP for this as well. I'm 80% used to not holding the right button for shift, but it has made tapping on the keyboard much easier than trying to learn about just one shift key.

The other mapping I changed was turning the green button into menu for everything except the phone application. This has also increased usability for me immeasurably.

So far what I've done with LudusP myself is just change the Green button to Menu. I haven't changed the lower-right Menu button to shift (yet).

I have TakePhone assigned to the Phone hard button, KeyGuardTime+ on Calendar press-and-hold, QuickLaunchAnywhere on the Mail key, and left the Home key alone.

Taking some getting used to, I've turned the thing off at least 50 times meaning to hit the Menu button in the last three days. Otherwise, seems okay. I like the majority of the keyboard, but my wifes 680 middle button on the 5-way definitely feels a lot better than mine. Maybe it'll wear in.

$5 to change one button, but the first day I tried to use the new Menu location and it drove me nuts. Nuts ain't that far from here, but I ain't got enough gas to get back.

I went almost whole hog: green button to Home, red button to Menu and home button to Power/End. I left the menu button as is, otherwise a long hold won't bring up the command bar (via FieldPlus); I never used it as a shift button anyway.

Does "Space toggles Speaker in Call" work for anyone?

I have to agree on the removal of the second shift key. I don't know what they were smoking. They're supposed to be all about usability, which was why the 650 had a second shift key added versus the 600. Why they took it away again is beyond me. It made the keyboard seriously unusable for high-speed tapping. Maybe they'll force us back to T9 in the next h/w release? LOL

How is that red mapping working? I considered that, but didn't because I was afraid of inadvertently shutting off the Treo. I have actually done that as I try to get used to using green for menu... but it's lightyears better than trying to reach low for it every time.

It's working fine for me. I'm using a dark skin case, so I don't have to be worried about getting confused by the button colors; it's great, I don't have to learn anything new.

*chuckle* No, it's not about button colors but rather memory of where things *used* to be. But it is interesting that you haven't had false power-offs. Maybe I'll adjust my mapping similarly and see how that goes.

Hmmm...on my 650, the menu button was where the 680's long red button is and the power/off button was where the 680's home button is. The changes I made reflect my old 650's set up. I was accidently turning off the screen or hanging up on people, in an attempt to access the menu, before I changed the button set up.

I think some of the things presented here are a result from having used 650 before, which I can understand.
I came from T3 (imagine that). I do not see the need to remap any keys apart from what can be done using Preferences - Buttons (obviously DB6 was linked to Calendar, Memoleaf for Alt-Calendar, made Snappermail the primary app and Message the alternative when using the Envelope key, nothing else). Should I consider other changes ?

I didn't realize you could remap ALL that.. hmm.. I might try that.

My other problem with the 680 is a lot of software that uses hardware keys inside seem to be all screwy. I can use HW buttons 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 won't work right. I think it's partially that ZLauncher has changed the way the keys are mapped, and I have HW 3 set to QuickLaunchAnywhere and 4 is the Home key.

    EDIT:

Aha... I see why I had problems.. Even if I set the Home button to be :Power/End it still launches ZLauncher. Maybe I can launch ZLauncher with the "Home" key directly, and disable the key in ZLauncher itself.

    EDIT 2:

AHA! That works nice! And works better; oddly.. Now when I hit Button 3, I get the real hardware button through to the device. Before in GeoNiche, buttons 3 and 4 were "stolen" by ZLauncher. Hopefully ZLauncher not being the default launcher won't wind up going to the Palm launcher all the time now.

    EDIT 3: ;-)

Bill, I just did "make menu shift" and if you hold it, I still get the command bar (via Butler). And shift works. Now my 680 keyboard is exactly like my 650. I think I'm not going to exclude the Phone app, because then Home goes to the Palm Launcher. I think I should be able to answer/etc with the 5 way. I'll make sure later.

I found a bug with LP and either of my BT headsets: http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=133820

    Anyone else see something similar?

    Hi Nico,
Every change I made with LP was because I was used to the way things are done on the 650; if you don't have to "unlearn" another Treo, then it probably doesn't make sense to change the basic function buttons around.

As far as the app buttons go, your assignments make sense.
