Is it possible to do a warm reset using software calls? If so, a utility to do this by running a program (vs holding the up button etc) will be very useful.

I always do my backups after a warm reset and it will be possible to schedule warm resets if an application was doing the warm reset.

are you looking for something that you can soft reset your unit via software?

In otherwords so you dont have to remove your battery cover etc?

Itd be nice if it also had the ability to hard reset too.

Im looking for the same thing if thats the case.

Take a look at Soft Reset, it's available on Palmgear.

I see nothing in the description that it does a warm reset, just a standard reset with the option to digitize or not. Ben

You have to hold the up button during a soft reset. I've seen programs to do a hard reset, but haven't come across one that can do soft reset via software alone.

I wanted to avoid any physical action like pressing the up button to do a WARM reset. So that WARM resets could be scheduled by running a utility software.

So, in short, I want to do a WARM reset just like the various software that do regular resets.

Which software does hard resets (on purpose)?

If you do a scheduled warm reset, wouldn't you still have to do the backup manually? http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-449.html
Visor Deluxe->Visor Edge (Upgraded for $100.00 just by giving them the Serial # of my Visor Deluxe plus I got to keep the Deluxe. Those were the days!)-> Palm M-505->M-515->Tungsten T->Zire 72->Treo 650->->Treo 700P->Treo 755P. Plus various replacements. 8130 Pearl....Sorry

    Aaargh!

This requires me to press the UP button and it doesn't work!! Keeping the UP button pressed while tapping OK still gets me a regular reset, not a warm reset.

I think the best solution is to use a better backup program. Resco Backup does not need you to warm reset to backup, and it works great. Schedule and all.

Actually, I'm not sure that any backup program really needs a warm reset before backing up. In any case, I've never had to do that with BBVFS.

The REsco guys advise this themselves. And I find that EVERY file verifies correctly if the BU is done after a warm reset.

For manual BU, it takes just a few seconds to do a warm reset. It is worth the comfort that all files are closed during BU.

    http://www.resco.net/palm/backup/aboutbackup.asp
"Warm reset (reset while "Up" button is pressed) starts just core system services without broadcasting reset notification. Among other consequences, this implies:

    * No background application is activated.
    * Smaller amount of opened/locked databases.

This in turn greatly reduces the risk in the backup/restore operations.

Before blaming a backup program that it crashed, you should always try backup after warm reset. Eventual success suggests that the backup program might be innocent. "

Hi Launcher has that ability, I believe itlls listed under specials then select reset. while in that screen choose properties select a Quick Launch letter and your set.

when I bring up HiLaunch, one long hold on my email button, then R (for reset) a quick re boot starts

There are many ways to do a reset (the plain simple reset, equivalent to the "poke the hole" or "remove the battery" reset). Resco Explorer has it under tools as well. There are many freebie programs that will do a simple reset for you.

But, it appears that there is no way to do a WARM or HARD reset via software alone. These specialized resets require an action by the user (like pressing a button during reset) while the reset (however initiated) is taking place.

I can understand why Palm chose to do that with potentially destructive reset like hard reset. But I am disappointed that one cannot do a WARM reset via software alone.

    So be it.

When I need to do a reset, it's usually because everything is frozen and non-resposive. Reset software is useless in this case, as I can't get to it.

Completely not necessary if you use NVBackup, in my opinion. All the other backup solutions I used destroyed the dbcache requiring a reset or crashed due to dbcache issues unless recently restarted, but never a problem with NVBackup.

Do you verify after a NVBackup that
    a) all files are getting backed up and
    b) all files in RAM match the backed up file on the SD card

I don't have the kind of problems you describe with Resco Explorer's BU. It's just that if I don't do a WARM reset, in the Verify phase, one or two files that are open (like Shim Logs) don't match with the backed up versions.

Probably harmless, but I don't mind the extra step of doing the WARM reset.

My guess is that those of you who BU without a WARM reset are not using (probably because your BU application doesn't have this feature) a Verify to compare the files in RAM to the one's backed up.
