My 680 should be here tomorrow How should I go about updating it with all my existing "stuff". Just hotsync with Palm Desktop and be good to go or is that a big "no no"? I know I'll have to reinstall my programs and what not.

    Hi MossMan!!

Do the clean install thing -- it will make your Treo 680 happy -- it will make you happy:

Perry has recently re-posted what's become the accepted "best practice" around here: in short, "Start Clean". What held true for moving from the 600 to the 650, held true for moving from the 650 to the 700 and also is the way to go when moving to the 680:

Not sure why Bill's link is not working, but it would be pointing to something like this: (just insert your old & new device numbers below, where you see 600 & 650)

You do not want to just sync your 650 to your 600's userid. It will create a brick, the 650 chokes on prior software settings on the 600 brought forward in this manner.

Do a last hot sync with your 600 and then follow these clean install instructions:

    1. Install the Treo 650 Desktop from it's CD -- it put's 650 conduits into place.

    2. Hard Reset your 650, creating a "just out of the box" 650 (unless it is just out of box)

    3. Rename your backup folder on your PC to backupold (Programs>Palm>userid>backup to backupold) ...Hopefully that's the path that Handspring used, but you get the idea. (The backup folder houses the 3rd party software you have installed in case a back up from a hard reset is necessary -- renaming the folder takes it out of the loop.)

    4. Before you proceed, right click the Hotsync Manager icon in the program tray, choose Custom and check the action of your PIM conduits (Calendar, Tasks, Memos, Contacts); if any are set to "Handheld overwrites desktop", change them to either Synchronize or DT overwrites HH - otherwise, you will delete all the PIM data on the desktop.

    5. Hot Sync the 650 to your userid.

You should have a clean Treo 650 with only your PIM data brought back from the 600.

Now install your desired 3rd party software fresh onto the 650 -- NOT from a backup! (Also, get the newest version, while you are at it.) When you Hot Sync again, a new backup folder is created, with the freshly installed 3rd party software backed up the way the 650 likes it.)

You should be good to go. (Do not HotSync the 600 to this userid again -- that will mess things up.)

    Cheers, Perry.

I have a 650 and backed-up my device using Backup Buddy VFS. Has anyone tried to just do a restore directly to a 680? I am reading that a clean install is always best but thought I'd ask if anyone has tried this. Thanks!

Do NOT EVER restore a backup from one hardware model to another. You are doing the same thing if you just sync without renaming the Backup folder.

If you want to use the same userid and replace your 650 -- as detective said -- a CLEAN INSTALL is the way to go.

If you are keeping the 650 as a back up -- leave it on the old userid and create a new userid for the 680. In this case -- you have several options on how to move your PIM data to the new 680 from the 650. (PIM = Contacts, Calendar, Memos and Tasks) (However, a new userid may require a new purchase of 3rd party software -- if it is so controlled -- in that case -- sell the 650 -- and keep your old userid.)

    1. A mass migration using the infared Beaming function.

    2. A restore of ONLY PIM data using BackupBuddy.

    3. A method probably in the Palm Web site Knowledge Base.

In all of these cases, you would ONLY move PIM data to the new device and then install all 3rd party software from scratch, fresh on to the 680 -- not from a backup!

    Cheers, Perry.

Also -- do not try to sync two Treos with the same userid (same models or not) to the same PC. Bad things will happen. You will not be happy. Stay happy. Don't try it.

Any way to sticky the "best practice" in the 680 forum?

Thanks Perry & Detective. I was planning to beam my apps 1 at a time. Can't wait to use the phone tomorrow. Waiting to get the phone unlocked to use on T-Mo ;-)

    Cheers!

    Woa Pardner!

I was planning to beam my apps 1 at a time. Can't wait to use the phone tomorrow.

This statement scares me -- if you are talking about the PIM apps -- great -- if you are talking about 3rd party apps:

DO NOT BEAM APPS OVER -- the files could contain setting info that will not work on the 680. Intstall all 3rd party apps -- as if you had just purchased them -- from the original .prc that was sent to you or from the original process that was provided.

You can beam your PIM applications: (Make sure beam send and recieve are on for both devices.)

    within Contacts on the 650
    select menu
    select beam by category
    select ALL, if prompted

this should beam all your contacts over to the 680

Similar process for Tasks, Calendar and Memos. . . . .

    Cheers, Perry.

I tried the restore from backup approach and it worked for a bit but then the resets started and for some reason Missing Sync started messing up and I lost my latest backup on both the hard drive and the SD card. So I would definitely follow the advise given here although it was a real pain installing everything from scratch. It took me about 4 hours to track down all my applications, keys, sync all my data and get everything up and running. This included backing at various points along the way just to be on the safe side.....

I am not familiar with missing sync, but you can do a hard reset, rename the backup file from your 700p, and then do a clean install. That is what I did after I had to exchange my first 680 due to unrelated phone issues.

    A couple of related questions:

i just got a copper 680 and used the "clean install" method decribed above to upgrade from my 650. however my call log and sms history did not port over. how do i get them? are there some files i can just copy to my new backup folder? also, i have ordered a graphite 680 and will choose between the copper and the graphite once i get it. if i decide to go with the graphite, can i just sync it without doing the clean install since i will be returning the the other phone and they would be the same model?

    would appreciate your help.

    thanks
