The NDA is lifted, and TreoCentral's review of the Treo 680 is up.

    Great review. Thanks.

One question though, on the 750v the reset button is located in the MiniSD compartment. Is it not the same on the 680?
  3. #3
There is not a reset button on the SD compartment of the 680.
To do a hard reset, one does a soft reset while holding the power button and then it does the normal hard resetting question action.

Antoine, i notice that w/ the PALM OS syncing email w/ MS Outlook Exchange server is more or less a scheduled task as opposed to WM5 where you have PUSH mail. I'm new to the PALM OS; so is there PUSH for it?

    * $199.99 from Cingular, with a two-year contract including unlimited data.
    * $274.99 from Cingular, with a one-year contract including unlimited data.
    * $449.99 from Cingular, with no contract (there is a month trial of Yahoo!'s music service and a free 1GB SD card, for a limited time only)
    * $399 from Palm, a preorder for the unlocked GSM version (shipping Dec 1st).

Is it seriously less to buy it unlocked? I think that's a first!

Is that a cut'n'paste from the specs, or the result of testing with a 4GB card and finding it doesn't work? I wasn't expecting SDHC support - although it would be nice - but if it's still limited to 2GB it'll be annoying... not a deal-breaker, probably, but annoying...

I just ordered on palm sight .I believe it said over night shipping for free but now it says 680s to ship in 1 to 2 weeks O the Horror!

So, they've said the new radio sounds much better than the 650. Any reports on how the call quality actually is? Everyone I call with the 650 says they have trouble hearing me. Have you actually tried the phone in a normal conversation with full bars and with reduced signal. If it's a good phone, I plan to get one, if not, then it's a pass. I love my 650 for everything except the phone part as it's only a passable phone.

Yea, I figure it will ship for free overnight whenever they decide to start shipping them... I ordered mine (crimson). At least I won't be Jonesing for it over the holidays here now... I can settle back and enjoy the time...

I am kind of disappointed by the review. It sounds like the reviewer is reviewing the spec instead of the actually phone (beside the "bigger battery fits on the 680" remark). I would like to see some SD card read/write benchmark or something. Give me some hardcord number.

No, not a push solution. Weird to me, but that's the way it was implemented. That might be the reason PalmInsider is reporting that Palm is looking to do a new email client.

Literally speaking (my numbers are finalized yet), if you poll all 8 VersaMail emial accounts on the hour, listen to 2 hrs of music, make about an hr of phone calls, read QuickNews for that same 2hrs that you are playing music, and some PIM, it will be dead before 9pm (and that is saying its fresh 100%). However, my last few days have been better, so the battery is most definitely settling in. Most people will not have an issue, but if you push it, you will see it do about 2/3 of what the 650 did.

I've been checking the review(s) for more information on synchronizing with the Exchange Server. That's the final test for me in determining if I'll go with the 680 or stick with a Windows Mobile device.

    1. Since contacts can now be synchronized OTA, will the photos that are assigned to the contacts on the Exchange Server be also synced with the 680? Right now, if that works great with WM devices.

    2. Will the categories for contacts, appointments etc also synchronize with the Exchange Server? Moreover, how does the slightly updated PALM OS handle items with more than one category in Outlook/Exchage? It used to cause a sync error.

    Thanks.

I'll see if can play with Exchange in the next week and see if I can get a clear answer to that for you. Fortunately/unfortunately, I have been using just the 680 since I got it and so there is a ton of info on here that I don't want to touch any Exchange server.

Seriously, we're hoping to add page render times later to see if the browser is noticeably better. I can also give you a list of application version numbers. I'm not sure if either is hardcore as 1000 digits of pi.

Push doesn't come standard -- you need a mail program that supports it, like the one from Good, which is the only supported push on the 680. Dieter tells me that Chatteremail fakes push support by hacking with the IMAP idle command.

On the 650, along with Good, you have the additional choice of BlackBerry connect via Cingular.

Well, the 680 gets better reception than the 650, which is going to help call quality as you get further from a tower (i.e., there will be less static). In terms of full-bars audio quality, it's not really distinguishable from the Treo 650, but you're more prone to be in a full-bar situation with the 680. In my testing, I didn't really have any issues with static except for when I was testing bluetooth range, and that was on purpose. I didn't get any complaints for anything but speakerphone. BT performance was also improved. The quality increase isn't "blow you away" better though...

    Sorry about missing your question:

    4GB is confirmed not working.

    Other things confirmed not working:
TomTom Navigator 6 Smartphone Edition 2 etc. from Palm. Gives a "your device is not supported" error and resets the phone. TomTom Navigator 5 works, however.

4GB does work (confirmed), see here, though for regular SD, not SDHC.

Palm does not support it, but certain non SDHC 4gb cards will work.

And THAT will be going away now that Motorola purchased Good Technology - conflict of interest.

How come they won't be bringing this to the 680? Is there some technical reason? Will they be refusing to enable it on the 680 until they take the 650 off the market... then allow it to run on the 680?

How come they decided to remove the Microsoft Exchange Push technology from the Treo 680. It was advertised as being included for 2 days when Palm first posted the information pages on this Treo 680. What happened? I'm not wanting Microsoft's push technology but I am curious as to why Palm posted it as a feature then took it away.

Right now, it doesn't seem like there will be any push e-mail solutions for Palm and its Treo 680 in the future.

Oh wait, what about the recent word that Palm will be redoing VersaMail. Will they be incorporating push e-mail into a future subscription based internet service?
