Was on my Sprint 650 with a friend earlier today when suddenly his voice became tinny and garbled. Eventually I couldn't hear him at all.

Established that the problem is the ear speaker as the speakerphone speaker and the headset work fine. System sounds work fine, as well.

Been reading the other threads about this... seems to be unfortunately very common on the 600 and 650. This irks me.

Sprint store wants $35 to look at it. If they can't fix it, that $35 pays for a new/refurb phone. Unless they deem that it got wet. Which it hasn't, but I seriously think they say that to make more money. Called *2 to try Retentions, but "their computers are down until tomorrow and cannot help me until them" (direct quote, couldn't believe my ears!)

Anyhow, off to find a T5 torx head to attempt a repair myself. What kind of a job am I getting myself into? Hopefully it is just a loose solder point or something similiar... could it be an actual bad speaker?

Hard and soft resets didn't help.

    Many thanks for all helps.

it could be a bad speaker, i replaced it on my friend's treo and it was very simple once you open the thing up. its held in place by friction, no solder at all.

follow this video for instructions on opening it

and i bought a replacement speaker from here:
    http://performancepda.com/

it was very simple but you should probably watch the video once or twice before you start.

I own a treo 650 but from cingular, and had the same problem. they told me the phone was under a year old and it was under warranty. and they just exchanged it for me
try talking to your provider its probably a known defect from palm and they have told the carriers to return the phones but you know some people can be greedy good luck

Well, called *2 today (after their outage last night) and their tech support wouldn't help me waive the $35 or get a new phone. So I asked for a transfer to Retentions, which he did.

Was on hold for a solid 15 minutes and some guy in Retentions answered. He was more than happy to waive the $35 after I explained the situation. He said it would appear as a credit on my December bill. So I guess we'll see next month.

When I got off the phone with him I went back down to the Sprint store and had their tech look at it for the agreed upon price of $35. He couldn't fix it I guess because he gave me a new 650. Doesn't look refurb at all. Can't see any scratches or any other signs that it is anything but brand new.

So all in all, I ended up with another 650 for free. This will be my third or fourth 650 and my ninth Treo replaced for free.

Well all last night and all day today, the phone would not turn itself back on after being off for anywhere from 3 minutes to 40 minutes. Especially wouldn't turn back on when in OEM cradle.

Back to the Sprint store tonight and they immediately replaced it. I am now on my 10th Treo.
