    Your digital watch (if you have one) is technically an electronic device. Do you remove the battery from it on takeoff and landing?

    Actually, I think the reason is that the older Palm devices (Treo 600 for example) didn't have non-volatile storage, so if your device lost power, you'd lose all your data, therefore, they made it so you couldn't turn off the device so people wouldn't accidentally turn it off and wonder why their data was gone when they turned it back on.
