I like the 680, but wondered if it will support EVDO. I know that Cingular--the only carrier for the 680 at this time--doesn't support EVDO, instead using EDGE (the 680 *does* use EDGE, though, right?...or is it limited to slow data transfer like the 650?).

If the 680 is ever offered with Sprint service, will it take advantage of EVDO?

    Thanks!

Yes EDGE will work on the 680. But the the antenna does not support next EVDO or 3G networks. I think that the 750 will come out with a CDMA version where there will be EVDO, but the main market of the 680 is for a less sophisticated user base.

    The 650 uses Edge too.

the 680 technically could support EVDO on sprint or verizon if Palm wanted to change the radio.

The 680 as announced is GSM only and therefore doesn't go edge. In theory if they came out with a CDMA version it might do EVDO, but I think it would be long time before it happens. The 700p uses an 1800mA battery can struggle to get through a long day of usage. The 680 only has room for a much smaller 1200mA battery, so I don't see how they could make a CDMA/EVDO version without it having unacceptable battery life.

    I get 120 kbit/s on my T650. Isn't that EDGE?

bcaslis, I guess you are making a mistake. 680 is EDGE capable. Check the specs

The 680 is GSM and thus includes EDGE (2.5G) support - the same as the GSM 650. It does not have UMTS/HSDPA (3G) because Palm OS doesn't support that. As for EvDO (3G), that's for CDMA carriers only, such as Verizon and Sprint.

Yes of course it's EDGE. I was stating that it's GSM based (which for data has GPRS or EDGE). I was pointing out that EVDO is CDMA based which is completely different.

    Yes, that EDGE data speed.

I could see Palm repackage the 680 to CDMA carriers, stick EvDO in it, and call it the 750p, or something. I can see this happening next summer-ish.

Battery life would be significant issue on CDMA. I have a 700p and if you use EVDO data it can struggle to get through a day with it's 1800mA battery. The 680 uses a much smaller 1200mA battery. Unless you break the laws of physics or acceptable a half day of battery life I don't see this happening.

Acceptable battery life is just an excuse. Whole day battery life is not holy. Palm has shown they are capable of making marketshare vs battery life trade off's many times already.

I would like to see someone do a "zero antena" mod and "front 680 cast replacement" mod on the 700p. Best of both worlds.

Right now the zero antenna kit is too expensive for my taste.

I find this statement bizarre. What excuse? The Motorola Q already gets slammed for it's mediocore battery life. A 680 size body and battery on CDMA is going to get battery life similar to the Q.

If Palm did come out with an EVDO version of the 680, they wouldn't call it a 680. Part of their naming convention is that their 3G capable devices are distinctively part of the 700 series. That's why the 680 is part the 600 series even though it came out after the 700W/P/WX. I think it's a lot more likely that the 750V will have a 3G CDMA counterpart rather than one being developed opposite the 680.

Thats a good point. They may come out with a 750p and 750w on the CDMA side. Both could be 3G.

Would you have believed Palm would come out with a 1200 mAh device 6 months ago? Their claims around the importance of battery life is specious. In fact, I am sure if you plot the battery life of Palm's devices though the ages it would only be a downward slope. If the market demands a thin device with a small battery, Palm WILL make it (eventually, and two years late), all their ideals be damned.

Does GSM/EDGE use that much less battery life than CDMA/EVDO?
