I'm running a 650 with a personalized rom which had been rock-solid for months and only recently has been acting up. I get resets (usually no more than twice a day, some days none). The resets are ALWAYS caused by one of three programs: Chatter 2.0.5; datebk 5.4, s6; or zlauncher 5.41 and are ALWAYS either a "fatal exception" or "memorymgr.c, line: 3771, Free handle."

Does anyone have any advice on this? I've heard that certain memorymgr.c chunk overlock resets mean bad hardware--I'm hoping that's not what it is because it took me three returns to finally get a flawless LCD (starting with dead pixels on my original, new Treo 650).

    Thanks for any help.

I have been getting the Line:3771 Free Handle using the recent betas of 4cast.

    See
    http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...=96901&page=19

The 4cast program has an option to "Use Old Network Libraries". Selecting that makes the problem go away.

I suspect some conflict between recent Palm libraries and older ROMS on Treo 650. Unfortunately, I'm running the current ROMS for Cingular Treos :-(

what's weird is that zlauncher v5.41 never gave me an issue until recently. Nor did chatter 2.0.5. I was using chatter 2.1.3 (I think?) but it was causing me so many problems that I had to hard reset and go back to 2.0.5 (I'm in the trial period so I don't have too much experience with it). I was using datebk6, but went back to datebk5 simply because of space-saving concerns.

    Hi,

From what I have seen trying to debug this on my 4cast app (withaprasad's help) I would suspect this is an issue with the (new) HTTP library supplied by Palm.

In fact - even their own developed HTTPLibText application crashes...

A longshot, but maybe you need to lock that library in memory, using Rlock or a similar utility ?

    TAKEphONE,

I assume you're talking to aprasad? Because I don't use 4cast. And all of the Fatal Exceptions and memorymgr.c, line: 3771, Free handle crashes that I've been getting are ALWAYS related to either Datebk5, Chatter or zlauncher. I even reflashed the official sprint ROM back onto the phone, replacing my custom ROM, to see if that would help. It didn't.

Is it possible the phone needs to be replaced, or is it probably a software issue? I do have the insurance, so I could try that if need be.

    Hi,

I suppose Chatter also uses the same HTTP library.
I will try contacting the developer.

After this reflash - I guess you installed those apps again ?

I would suggest you try replacing the phone, and let us know if it resolves your problem.

BTW - are there any defined steps to geting the crash ?

As I had recently done a hard reset and reinstalled everything in my quest to stop the crashes, I did not reinstall datebk and chatter after I reflashed the ROM.

Then I had a thought: Both chatter and datebk are mapped to use the respective hard buttons. It struck me that the crashes may be occuring when the pda is off (screen is off) and I turn it on by hitting either the calendar or email hard button to go directly to that program. I'm gonna give it a day to see if turning it on using the power button and then hitting the hard button has any effect. It shouldn't, but we'll see.

    Okay,

So I hard reset, went back to using chatter 2.0.5 and installed everything one by one and...would you believe it... no more resets! I have still not reinstalled keycaps600, so I'm suspecting that was the issue. Could anyone else confirm an issue with keycaps?

Try the Keycaps found here. I have been using it for a long time without any problems.

That's the one I was using, too. Are you using the beta or the earlier release?
