Palm Continues Palm OS Development With Treo 680
    Yesterday, 1:11 PM source: Palm

Palm today unveiled their first Palm OS smartphone with an internal antenna. The Treo 680 is similar in design the Windows Mobile Treo 750 announced earlier, however its features are more similar to the Treo 650. It features quad-band GSM/EDGE, 320 x 320 screen, a VGA camera, Bluetooth and Infrared as well as 64 MB of avalable memory as well as a card slot. Palm has also improved the integration between the Palm Os applications and the phone, as well as the main menu, bringing the 680 a little closer to Palm's Windows Mobile offerings. It is expected to sell for $199 when it is released in mid-2007.

But then again, we are talking about Palm here!

Maybe that is the unlocked, unbranded release date. Speculation is that it will be released by Cingular early next month (the 3rd?)

I've heard early November, and the Mid-2007 date is for the world-wide release outside of the US

This seems to point to unlocked coming first:

"Palm's U.S. retail and online stores will sell exclusively an unlocked GSM version in four new cool colors - crimson, copper, arctic and graphite. For a limited time, they will come complete with a music bundle from Yahoo!, which includes a 30-day free trial to its music service. With Yahoo! Music Unlimited, users have access to more than 1 million songs to take with them anywhere."

That would also agree with this random post on Cingular's forums...

You all need to get into your local Cingular store. I live in central Virginia and the local store rep showed me printed notes from a meeting showing the release dates of the new Treo 680 and 750 as November 3rd and November 14th respectively. Also the release of the new Blackberry Pearl, and a new version of the Cingular 8125. (goes by a different number) can't remember.

    Good Luck!

The mid-2007 date is a misquote from the press event yesterday. What was actually said was that the 680 should be available from at least 20 different carriers worldwide by mid-2007.

Since the different colors will only be available through Palm, I also expect that the unlocked, unbranded version will be available at the same time as the first carrier, which should be Cingular, in a few weeks.

It would be pretty silly to make the color options a major selling point, and then not make them available in those colors out of the gate.

Then again, Palm has been known to do silly things before. So who knows?

I think you may be right - details on the 680 have just gone up on Palm's UK web site, and if it wasn't going to be available here for 9 months, that would seem a bit dumb!
