No. In fact, with an EVDO connection you could easily wipe out a 20MB data plan in just a few minutes using Google Maps. I wouldn't even dream of using Google Maps without an unlimited data plan.

Phew! Glad you told me, Keefer! So is the app just something that triggers the dl of maps each time?

    FWAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPapapappap......

That was the sound of my old Thomas Guide getting tossed out the car window. What an incredible program!

So, my list of hoped-for features:

    - Ability to set cache size and location
    - Ablity to clear the cache without clearing the cookies and location history
    - "Clear cache on exit" feature
    - startup options- go to last location, pick default starting point, etc.

But, hey, if they NEVER implement any of those features, I'm a happy camper. Thanks, Google!

You can simulate these features if you use PowerRun or LinkStart to keep GMM and its "tile cache" on the card when not in use.

I love the ability to hit # and have the traffic come up. Simple and effective.

There are some phones with actual GPS in them, but otherwise when GPS is referred to it means triangulation from the cell towers, which is a tower-side feature. Said another way, unless told, the phone has no idea 'where it is'.

If you're paying for it on some phones with directions, etc, it means the network is feeding it the location. But otherwise the phone doesn't know.

Also, this sort of technology is pretty inaccurate, it could be hundreds of feet off at any given time.

Here in Honolulu, Hi with Nextel, it is about .25 miles off - not worth even messing with here. Ben

You are correct. I was wrong - the Treo uses tower triangulation for location determination.

When exiting the app, it remains online. Is there data being transfered still? Is it possible to exit online from the app without going on Blazer and disconnecting there?

    Great application tho. Very useful!!

No data is being transferred once you're out of the app. They have no disconnect option within the app (maybe more of an issue for CDMA than GSM, but I never disconnect my data connection, it eventually does it on its own)
    Palm III > HS Visor > Treo 600 > Treo 650 > Treo 750 > Treo Pro > PrePlus GSM

"95% of all software issues are due to USER ERROR."

Thanks! I take it Blazer is the same way then, once your out of the app, no data being transfered?

Why did you install to SD card? Don't you have a 700?

You're eating into your wireless plan's minutes until you disconnect from the network. How soon is "eventually"?

Good lord, not unless you're using CSD which is HORRIBLY slow.

Otherwise data has no connection to wireless minutes for any carrier I know of.

    What an unbelievably amazing application!

Regarding PowerRun: It seems GoogleMaps only uses two files: the prc itself (about 420k), and just one cache file (max size of 1.1 MB), which is great for PowerRun. That said, when I moved it to the SD card, and then back again, when I tried to run the App I get an error message -- something about Google Maps requiring a ARM processor or something. Ultimately I to delete Google Maps and resinstall it, and the error went away.

Secondly, I must admit that I just deleted Kmaps. Kmaps is indeed amazing, but it just can't compare to Google Map's speed, satellite imagery, and traffic reports. Getting directions is faster and easier too. If I wasn't so Ga-Ga for Opera, I would have deleted Java too, but what can you do?

Props to the Kmap developer for getting such a great app together in the first place. I'm sure the Google team was staring at it when making their own...

Progress? Well, at least I can get color traffic maps now...
