A little late since I am/was worried about hard resets, but now that i am comfortable, any conflicts?

I have app such as verichat, ringo, etc.

Will I lose my apps? Is it worth the trouble? Any suggestions? Advice? Do's and Don'ts?

    Thanks in advance!

    ike301,

I'm in the same boat, I'm still using Sprint 1.12a. I have been dragging my feet on this ROM upgrade. I would have probably done the conversion several month ago, but I had several issues with my Treo/Palm Desktop/Hot Sync. Over the past 6-12 months, I have noticed that the Hot Sync process would hang on Calendars (then I would change the Hot Sync to "Do Nothing"). A month or two later, it did it to Tasks (then I change the Hot Sync to "Do Nothing"). Now, I do not backup (via Hot Sync) Calendars, Contacts, Tasks, or Memos. I only back up via SD card (by BackUpBuddyVFS Pro). So, if I did the upgrade, I would lose all my DB's in those 4 (unless I figure out how to extract these files, copy them, and restore them after the v1.13 upgrade).

Lately, I have been noticing my Treo having an increase in "white screen hangs" for 2-10 seconds, delays between applications, or soft resets. Usually, this occurs if I haven't done a soft reset in a while (I usually schedule 2-5 soft resets a week to try to keep it stable).

I didn't think that the Sprint v1.13a version was much of an upgrade, but I'm am thinking that the "new memory management system" may be worth the upgrade. I have talked with some of my co-workers that have v1.12a and v1.13a. It seems that the v1.12a has the above stated problems, but the v1.13a seems do be significantly less, if any.

So, right now, I would like to upgrade to v1.13a, but after reviewing some information on TreoCentral, 1Src, MyTreo.net, etc, I found out that most were happy with the upgrade and a small minority had problems. One thing that caught my eye was that one user tried to go to v1.13a but had problems, s/he wanted to go back to v1.12a but is unable to (s/he tried to re-install v1.12 updater, but the Treo wouldn't let him/her regress back to a prior version.....I don't know if you could use Shadowmite's Custom ROM to try to re-install v1.12???). I hate to lose my data (Contacts, Memos, Calendar, and Tasks), but if I could gain more stability (less hang times, less resets), it might be worth it.

I don't know if this helps or not, but I will be watching this thread fairly closely for responses.

    Thanks

    1. it would hang on my outlook too. try this one time: open outlook first before the hotsync. actually after i did that, it fixed the problem.

    2. me too. lot of hangs and then an eventually breakdown. sprint technichian hard resetted my phone (which i could of done myself) and then i performed a backup and so far so good. however, when it was syncing it i saw a lot of old 'removed' programs and trials go back in. here's my shameless plug:

    3. yeah me too. i want to know if it really is worth it. with rom upgrades, i want to hear more chatter before i do it, b/c like that girl, once you go, you cant go back.

help me out on my other thread too. i'd appreciate it.

I've found the update has me running much more stable. I can go a month or more without any unwanted resets.

    ike 301,

I decided to take the plunge and upgraded from Sprint 1.12a to 1.13a. I was risking of losing my DB's, but luckily, after the 1.13a upgrade, I was able to restore everything! (Just restored everything from my BackupBuddyVFS Pro). So far, I have noticed it is very quick between applications, even after switching between large application (ie PEPID, ePocrates, Docs2Go, etc). I did not notice any hangs, pauses, or resets. I'm glad I took the plunge and upgraded to 1.13a. I will give you another update in a week if any bugs pop up.

    ike301,

It was pretty easy: (the official Palm.com web-site for the update directions: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...print_win.html)

    1. Turn off the Phone feature (unconnect from Sprint PCS)
    2. Made sure my battery was 100% charged.
    3. Hot Sync under my "original" user name.
    4. Backed up my Treo 650 via BackupBuddyVFS
    5. Took out my SD card (just to be on the safe side)
    6. Did a Hard Reset on my Treo 650
    7. Created a new "fake" Hot Sync user name
    8. Downloaded and Unzipped the Sprint Treo 650 v1.13a updater from Palm.com
    9. Double-clicked on Treo 650 1.13a SPNT.exe
    10. Follow the direction but make sure you pick the "fake" Hot Sync user name to use to transfer the new ROM updater to your Treo
    11. The update took around 3-5 minutes to Hot Sync and the ROM updater took 10-15 minutes to re-write the new ROM on your Treo
    12. The Treo automatically does a hard reset when it is done updating
    13. In the Phone Application under Phone Info, the Software should say "Treo 650-1.13a-SPNT"
    14. The Palm website then recommends a Hot Sync under your "original" user name, but I restored my information from BackupBuddyVFS (I was worried about this step since I saw a couple of posts of people doing this and it caused reset loops), and fortunately, all my information was restored (all contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, and memos, etc....even all my passwords/registration codes)

So far, in this last 72 hours since the v1.13a update, I have only had two white screen hangs-1. a 2 second hang going into the phone application, 2. a 8 second hang going into the calendar application. Not bad since I usually get a lot more hangs than this with v1.12.

    Hope this helps

Here's my one week update with Sprint v1.13a:

    Pros:
    1. Significantly reduced number of "white-screen" hangs - only had two (one 2 second, another at 8 seconds) in the past 8 days; interesting enough, both were after pressing the green phone button
    2. Seems to be faster between applications, especially between large applications (like Doc2Go, ePocrates, PEPID, etc)
    3. New Sprint splash screen

    Cons:
    1. Seems like the battery meter goes down faster than before the update

yay. solid man! thanks for the info. i just did it and restore everything, everything is kool and the gang, even verichat.

will report later on in the week on the haps.

one thing i will note, is that i used a non-powered sync cord so when it was updating, i was not synced, only powered (you'll understand when you get to that point). it was OK. i was sitting there worried that it needed power AND sync at the same time, but turns out, after you load the updater, it only needs the power attached when it is rewriting the ROM. (PM me with questions.)

it took maybe a few minutes for the indicator bar to start moving indictating the progress. i thought it was stuck, but it moved eventually. make sure to review the palm site too.

    thanks again!

    ike301,

Congrats on your ROM upgrade. Glad to see things went well.

Had my first "white screen hang" that lasted > 30 seconds and required a soft reset....oh well....interesting enough, all my "white screen hangs" occur when I turn on the phone feature (and connect to Sprint PCS), then push the green phone button. If I push a different button or go to another application prior to the phone application, no "white screen hangs."

i spoke too soon. got a calling hang. but i have experienced these before the update too. here's a thread i started - maybe someone knows something.

it's prolly a software conflict, since the updater run required a hard reset and all the apps were 'backed up' in full.

Guess 've gotten one of the good 'uns from the start. The 650's been stable as a post, since having brought it home. Still is.

Getting a successful upgrade didn't happen the first time, though. Didn't happen the second, or third, either. Seems like getting it right involves a combination of following the instructions and some trial-and-error-induced intuition.

Give yourself some time for the procedure and remain calm. Or, vent and come back when you're calm. Repeat as necessary.

"Documents to Go" turned out to be my biggest hurdle to the process. Ended up, I had to delete the thing, perform the update, then reload that program.
    Your own troubles may vary.

Do, definitely, remove any memory cards, first, as per the instructs.

Might could want to, especially, heed the part about performing a good backup, before embarking upon this project, as well. I even hardcopied my contacts, just because they go way back. That can be fixed with a match, afterwards, though. The backup did allow me to reset the crud out of the thing, without worry. Especially, since it took a couple three resets, in order to get one to take properly. (And, that was on my second download attempt, also.)

vsluv2golf has posted a pretty durned good description of the procedure. Read the "official" one, too, though. As a side note: Believe he's right about the battery load increase. Not a big one, mind you, but noticeable.

Used my genuine ID, for the second HotSync, and had no problems with loops, hang-ups, and such. Believe that was on my fifth attempt. Well, have to admit, 've never been the sharpest light bulb in the knife drawer...

i forgot to mention that on the palm site

    http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...print_win.html

it does mention to upgrade the documents to go under the 'before you install' section. i never used the the doc to go program so it didnt affect me.

Just as a note: Had tried the recommended upgrade method for "Documents to Go," twice, before giving it up and uninstalling the works. Make sure to have your key number saved aside, before uninstalling "Documents...," though. Makes it much easier to re-install the program, after completing the upgrade.

Just an update: So far so good, fewer resets and all and all, pretty smooth ugrade on the ROM.

One note. Tell me i'm not going crazy. But, do any of you guys feel it takes a little longer to connect to a call? Or is it just me? before, i felt like it would connect way faster. Sometimes I look, and it goes all the way to 6 seconds before i hear it dialing. or am i going crazy???
