    Or do we have to keep using third party solutions. I'd love iTunes to transfer playlists over with the music.

    If you're a Mac user, I recommend SyncTunes. While it is a 3rd party solution (which is what you're trying to avoid), it's awesome and it's free. You can transfer songs and playlists to your SD card, organize them in folders (or not), convert songs to different bit rates (or not), and over-write existing songs on the card (or not). All you have to do is create iTunes playlists with the songs you want to move to the SD card, and SyncTunes does the rest. In other words, it does exactly what I always wanted to be able to do to organize the music on my SD card.
