i was just wondering why people havent bought the treo 700p or 700w.
im not really a new member its just that when i have a problem i just
search and i usually find it no problem. lol

but anyways the reasons that i havent bought the 700w or p is because.

    i can get a 650 for 200$ and a 700 for 375$ (used of course)

im using a local provider and am still not sure if the treo 700 will
program to it. (but am willing to try)

i cant live without A2dp. and the 700w or p doesnt have this

although i do want wifi, i still want a2dp (still praying for a solution for 650)
    (other than the sled.)

i think these are the main reasons for me at least.

I have not at this point because I am with Cingular and I am waiting to see what they actually come out with next. I have heard both 700 P & W will be out but I have also heard that they will have the 750 in December. I am going to wait. I do not want to leave Cingular because I have been with them for a very long time. I still love the 650 and will stay with it as long as I can.
    Thank You,

Same here....loyal Cingular customer and $19.99 for unlimited data. Until something much better comes along, I'm happy with what I've got.

There's no GSM version of the 700p yet (unlocked or otherwise).
The upgrades are pretty minor and not all that attractive to me, especially given the custom roms available on this board.

I am waiting for the unlocked 750 to use on T-Mobile. I am tempted to try the Universal or something else that will talk to my Exchange Server. But I'd rather get the Treo form factor if I can. In the meantime I still like my 650. My wife has a 650 too and it's easy to beam appointments to each other -- three kids playing soccer and getting the calendar sorted out gets to be a problem.

Given how BAD the upgrade from 600 to 650 was, and glancing at the nightmares that 700 users are posting over in the 700 forum, I doubt I will be upgrading any time soon, if ever. Actually if I can find a non-palm hardware solution I like (I haven't yet :-( ) - I am SOOO done with Treos. I loved my 600, but it was missing a LOT of features (bluetooth being the main of those) - I upgraded to 650, and now it is crashing every few hours, bluetooth is barely functional, and my hard-wired car kit is useless because Palm refusing to release a driver which they already have - since GSM versions of 650 have it. Not to mention that even with the driver much of the functionality of the car kit is lost since you cannot send audio from non-calls to the kit. Palm is pretty much abandoned the product in favor of newer bad products. 700 promises more frequent crashing, half the software not functioning, and no significant new features (unless you cound even buggier memory system than 650).... yeah, I am so spending $400 to upgrade ... Does anyone make a decent smartphone these days? Preferably one with PalmOS, but at this point I would consider Windows..

the 700 series aren't enough of an upgrade from a 650 for me.

evdo is great, but coverage isn't ubiquitous yet, so if you don't live in evdo range, you're basically surfing at 650 speeds. not too cool.

we can't listen to music via bluetooth headset yet, so the new bluetooth 1.2 is virtually the same as 1.1 in my view. doesn't sell me.

there are still resets and crashes in the 700 series. if I'm paying $599 again, its gonna be a stable device, or I'm not buying period.

the processor is still 312mhz. virtually the same as the 650 the next device will have a faster processor which is less power-hungry - for longer battery life. this is the kind of significant enhancement that would make me consider upgrading again.

the screen res on 700p is still 320x320. no difference from the 650.

streaming video is cool but by no means capable of handling all video formats yet - so I'm passing on it until it handles most of what's out there.

the camera is 1.3 mpixels. nice zoom feature, but not a dealmaker for me yet.

the added memory 64 - 128 mb ram is good. step in the right direction, but not enough to pay $599.

what it will take for me to upgrade:

    1) an enhanced screen

    2)128 mb ram

    3) a2dp bluetooth

    4) at least a 400 mhz processor with lower power consumption

    5) longer battery life, more talk time

    6) a newer, more stable operating system, which eliminates the frequent crashes and resets

    7) improved speakerphone - clear without crackling

    8) access to ev-do at all times

    9) improved, faster blazer - handles cache better.

    10) wifi not necessary butwould be a neat extra feature.

if a new treo could deliver all the above goods, I'm upgrading. until then, the 650 is just fine for my needs.
    I gotta have more cowbell

there's no upgrade for unlocked gsm

I'd like to upgrade but no EVDO in my area. I'm with Sprint and I would be forced to pay more for Power Vision even though I wouldn't see the benefits. I occasionally my 650 as a modem and certainly don't want to pay the outrageous price for that.

If EVDO becomes available I'll probably upgrade but until then it's pointless. The camera and memory would be nice but I'm not willing to pay that much for them. Also I purchased my Treo 650 in November 2004 and would have to wait until November to get the new every two discount.

Edit: And I want to get one of the short anttenas! I don't mind tearing apart an older treo. Might even paint it or something.

I bought a 700p a couple of days out of the gate when it was first released, but cancelled before I got it because it didn't seem worth it to pay $400 for more memory and EVDO. I have 19 apps in RAM and still have 15.5MB left on my 650; the rest on my SD card.
It works just the way I want it to with minimal resets.

I have the insurance so when my 650 finally does give out, the 700 will cost me nada. Hopefully my 650 will last until the next gen Treo..not really impressed w/the 700p.

But I wonder at what price all of you would upgrade. Everyone here says they wouldn't get it because for them it is not worth the price. Would you upgrade if the 700p was free? $100? $200? Sprint retentions offered me a 700p with no contract or trade in of my 650 in the beginning of July. I didn't take it because I didn't think the 700p was even worth $150 at the time. I held out for over a month but my screen name (gadgetfreak) prevailed and I took the deal in mid-august. I agree with everyone that it is not worth $400+. I am pretty happy with my decision at $150 though. More internal memory and EV-DO in NYC (I assume calls come through while on active data - I haven't tested yet) are the only reasons to switch. I can't use zLauncher though because it slows down the 700p to a crawl (we are all waiting for a palm upgrade). But overall, to ME it was worth $150 to have the new toy. I wouldn't upgrade my wife's 650 though - even for $100.

So you're saying you called Sprint and threatened to leave if they didn't offer you a deal on the 700P then didn't bother to take it for months? Why else sould retentions be involved?

Back to the original topic, I don't plan on upgrading until there's a Linux-based Treo. Way it's looking right now, that might be a while, so I might have to go with the upcoming Cingular model a year or so after it's released (ie: price is lower).

Yes, that is exactly what happened. I called Retentions in July and arranged for a 700p for $150. Then I said I would think about it. After 2 months, I called them back. They said they stopped with most of the Retention deals as Sprint realized they spent $2 million on these deals and, in the end, didn't "retain" too many people. But, since there was a note in my account, they honored the $150 price. Except for the skipping in P-Tunes and the fact that I can't use zLauncher, I am a happy camper.

well i took the plunge and purchase a 700w off of ebay. only cost 330$ my main thing is wifi. i need it. thats basically it. ill wait for ad2p if it ever comes.

personally, i'm broke lol. I keep eyeing the 650's on ebay (i still have my sparkly 600) but in reality, my 600 works just fine for me. I don't use it for business except the occasional phone number look up with Dir Assist. I also like the unlimited internet for $20 with cingular so i'll prolly wait til they release something new.

I didn't upgrade yet because I'm in Canada... And it's a bit slow to get new technology here... :s

I get sentimental with electronics I've spent a lot of time modifying, and a lot more time using: you'll pry my 650 out of my cold dead hands. There's practical reasons I don't upgrade, but I loves me my little phone and that's a bit of a factor too.

The 600-to-650 upgrade was nightmarish, as somebody already said. The switch to NVFS caused and continues to cause problems; but this late in the game, firmware updates and third-party apps (check out palmpowerups.com; if our pantheon needs a god of small electronics, I say it is Dmitry) and careful custom-romming have made the once-bug-ridden 650 a very (or at least reasonably) stable platform.

Ready for another nightmarish transition? The 700p is just out; a lot of apps don't support it yet, due to some change that created a new bug, and some that are no longer developed never will support it. The firmware is fresh out of development and early adopters are the guinea pigs. I have little doubt Grack or Shadowmite will come up with a ROMtool for the 700p, but it's not here yet. The 700p will have its day, but I'll let the early adopters have their headaches and if my treasured 650 dies after the 700p's had some time to stabilize, maybe I'll step up.

As far as upgrading to the 700wx ... Windows Mobile? Heresey! Burn the witch!

    Threatening your carrier is lame..

And ZLauncher works. Get the beta. Not sure why they haven't released it yet, but the beta fixes the home key bug.
