i think the 700p is really good, but.....when is a ROM update coming. some of the issues are getting really annoying for me. my other big issue are 3rd party developers not getting off thier a$$ and fixing most of the issues they are causing on a 700p!

I searched all of TC discussions for versamail pc3 and pc4. found nothing except this thread, which i started. can you provide a better way to discover this tip?

But the Treo 700p is the best thus far. Why?

    - Resets rarely, compared to the 650 and 600, which reset often.

    - If you delete the Versamail pc3 and pc4 files, it runs fast (search TC on this). True, Palm has a problem, but this is easy fix)

    - Better Bluetooth (although in general, BT is sucky).

So, while I understand the comments, I disagree. If you can find a better device, buy it (and tell us).

the actually files are asc3 and asc4, if you do a filter for them in filez you can delete all of the non-rom files at once. I had to check back and fort a few time, i could see mixing up asc3 and pc3

keep in mind that these files are your VersaMail files, so if you use that program, you might get rid of your emails.

    the full thread is here.

ok that's weird. versamail isn't even on my treo anymore. i know i didn't delete it. there are two versamail files in ROM that add up to only 15K.

    no asc3 files either.

Do you have Sprint or Verizon? On Sprint Versamail seems to be in ROM, but it's not on Verizon, you have to load it from the CD. So it would be impossible to "delete" Versamail on Sprint, but very possible to do on Verizon.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. It's difficult to deny that the 700p is buggy and slow in ways that the 650 wasn't. My phone once went into a reset loop once while trying to reconnect to Power Vision after emerging from a no coverage area and I had to do a hard reset (make sure that you have the 'Disable Chatter while roaming' option checked in Chatter; I think it minimizes the potential problems that may arise from going in and out of coverage). I also had problems with the LED light and painfully slow application switching, but these were fixed by hard resetting and installing my apps and data from scratch (as opposed to simply syncing my existing 650 settings, which is what I initially did). The red button is sometimes not responsive (especially when using 2day), and the touchscreen sometimes randomly decides to stop working for a little while. PocketTunes is jumpy with Chatter running in the background (although expecting skip-free music while simultaneously running such a major application might be asking too much). Those are the worst problems I've experienced. Having said that, however, none of the issues I've encountered with the device are intolerable for the time being, and I'll be happy if they're fixed by a firmware update (I am getting a little impatient though).

QuickNews is known to not close sockets properly after updating feeds. That might be responsible for some of your data network-oriented issues.

Keyguard is useless if it doesn't come on, and mine frequently doesn't. Calls I never made, deletions waiting for confirmation that I never did.... C'mon Palm. Maybe I was naive to think that after the complaints about the 650 you'd have your act together, but I was sadly wrong. Sick of resets when I need it to work - and the ones when I don't need it to work suck too. My next smartphone will likely not be made by Palm/Access or any related company.

We all have little problems, but hopefully Palm/Sprint will fix it soon. Just remember, everything has to s**t sometime...

....just don't hold your breath for the firmware updates anytime soon. Palm seems overextended lately, and not with Palm OS releases.

But I guess hope springs eternal.

Keyguard doesn't normally "come on"....it's either on or it's disabled. If Keyguard doesn't always work for you either way, you either have 3-party software that is conflicting with Keyguard, you are carrying it in such a way that something is pressing on the buttons that awake the 700p INCLUDING the center button, or you have a bad unit that needs to be replaced. With the resets you have apparently been having it sounds like you have a software conflict or a bad unit. It really is that simple, and very easy to figure out which one it is. I don't why anyone would put up with what you've been experiencing.......

I have seen pre-paid phones work better than my 700P. Yes I am new to Treo (had a blackberry for 6 or 7 years). I have been with Treo 6 weeks.

    -I have had 4 replacements
-God knows how many complete resets
    -dials by it's self
-shut OFF (not drops calls, shuts off) during calls
    -freezes
-I request a web page, go get coffee, return and I still don't have the page
-sometime it see's the SD card, other time it will not
-I can dial a number, and it can be up to 1 minute before it rings
-I don't know why, but with each of my phones I had to constantly reclabirate the touchscreen weekly.

I agree with the owner of this thread, technology will have problems. But for the $1000.00 I have invested in this phone..................

Wow... Now that sounds like a defective unit.

I've had bad Treos, that certainly can happen. No offense, but one of the common mistakes I've seen new users make is to get the phone and load up everything they can then have stability problems.

I would take the Treo, do a hard reset and load up only what you absolutely have to have. Like contacts, calendar events, and website links. Use it like that for a day or so. If you have still having these sorts of problems then get it exchanged.

Even "good" software can cause problems on newer devices. When the 650 came out I tried Verichat and immediately had huge stability problems. Everyone kept saying that Verichat worked fine, but the only way my 650 ever worked properly was to remove Verichat (not trying to pick on it, just making a point).

my bad on the psc3/asc3 confusion.

Thank you xsavior for clearing this up. Files with the asc3, asc4 should be deleted per that thread. This is in reference to the Sprint 700p, but it definitely speeds up the responsiveness.

this assumes you are NOT using versamail as your email client (get Snappermail instead :-) )

I disagree. I experience these same exact problems on a daily basis as do most 700p owners. Maybe not to the degree as myself or others, but they are lying if they say they don't experience many of these problems on a daily basis. The issues have been well discussed around here since the release of this phone

The bottom line is that the 700p is a decent PDA/phone that DESPERATELY needs a firmware update. With a firmware update, it would go from a decent PDA/Phone to an good/excellent PDA/Phone. It has SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

Come on Palm...release a firmware update...it's been over 3 months!!!!

You'd think with all their experience and popularity with the Treo 650 and POS5, the 700p would have been a slam dunk. Unfortunately, Palm decided to go with a different manufacturer instead of the venerable HTC and I think build quality went out the window. I think all the hardware and software issues we've seen can possibly be blamed on how the 700p was manufactured. If there are internal hardware issues, a hardware revision and not a firmware update is going to fix things.

I have had my 700P for three months. It works FLAWLESSLY. If yours doesn't , send it back. SIMPLE! JUST STOP YOUR PATHETIC WHINING! You probably don't have the slightest idea of what you are doing anyway. Go out and buy an Etch a Sketch. I'm sure that it will meet your meager needs.

    Rjmoose,

I don't experience ANY of the things the OP is complaining about, much less on a daily basis:

    1) I'm on my first Verizon unit purchased on 5/27/06.
    2) The only time my 700p resets is when I test large roms for Palmmame.
    3) It has never dialed by itself.
    4) It has never shut off during a phone call.
    5) I DO get occasional system freezes, but they don't happen daily and they don't last more than a few seconds. It's a network access function.
    5) I've never had to wait a really long time for a web page.
    6) I've never had a problem with my Adata 4GB SD card being recognized.
    7) It has never taken more than 10 seconds for my calls to ring, and most occur within 5 seconds.
    8) I don't have to recalibrate my touchscreen every week,

You can call me a liar if it makes you feel better about your own 700p experience, but that doesn't make it true. To be sure, I do have some problems: mild skipping in Ptunes if I try to access the Network (Snappermail, Blazer, etc.) while listening in the background, and BT range kinda sucks, but these are not mentioned by the OP. And I have a TON of 3rd-party software, most running from the SD card and all carefully checked to not cause conflicts. If you experiencing the problems listed by the OP, you either have a software conflict or a bad unit, IMHO.

Same here. Not a "power user." Phone has been OK. Happy with Sprint.
