Use Chatter email for your AOL mails needs. You can do all you mention above with Chatter.

Once you go chatter you can't co back to anything else, it's the best app for a Treo.

When you created your AOL account in Chatter, you would have seen a "load folders" button. After your folders are loaded, you can move messages to a selected folder. If you want access to a particular folder to read messages, then while in your AOL account in Chatter, you create a "new mailbox" and select the folder you want to use as the new mailbox.

If you dont see all your folders, use the right select button on the 5-way to expand the folders list.

Think the one benefit with aol is that they have a saved on aol folder where you have saved emails indefinitely online. Plus how would you report emails as spam in chattermail or some other email program? Doing something similar within the program might be great and all for that, but I don't think it helps when you're actually using aol.

Also, creating folders and such in chattermail isn't going to jive with folders you have in aol. The nice thing about creating the saved on aol folders is that no matter where I log in (whether travelling for work or what not) I have access to those saved mails

AOL still doesn't have anything mobile that is anywhere close to it's capabilities within the program or through aol.com. aol.com doesn't work on Blazer and mobile.aol.com is just basic. Yahoo mobile is much better in that respect. They should take a few lessons from them.

And you still managed not to answer the original question.

Since I am the first "shill" who made mention of Chatter in this thread, allow me to respond to your attack on me. Your statement about Chatter being the answer to "any" question about Treo is of course absurd and blown out of proportion. As is your statement about swiss cheese, the mentioning of which would provide no valuable benifit in any Treo releated thread. You have billowed and ranted but have provided no added value to this thread, other then laughable entertainment value. My Chatter contribution to this thread has assisted a fellow AOL user and forum member with their AOL email issues.

You also have some wild conspiracy theory about who is behind Chatters advertising. Certainly not I. I am a registered Chatter user, have paid my fee's and get nothing in return from the developer other then a program that works well. Is Chatter the cure all for "any" Treo issue? Of course not. Is it a cure all for many email (AOL or otherwise) releated Treo issues? It could very well be. My making mention of Chatter in this thread was directly in responce the thread creators question about AOL mail shortcomings on the Treo. Had the question posed been about anything other then email, then the mention of Chatter would have been out of place.

The original question was about AOL software being updated...AND...the softwares email shortcomings. The mention of Chatter or any other email program that can provide what the threads creator was looking for was certainly appropiate to the topic being discussed. Much more appropiate then your contribution of hyperbole, conspiracy theories and dairy products.

I don't think Gordo's advice helps at all as it is a pda only solution. Creating whatever in Chatter doesn't match up to AOL's software at home or it's use on aol.com. Folders won't match up. Saved On AOL won't work. Reporting as Spam won't work. So I don't see how your advice was helpful.

In general, people don't always want alternatives. They want to see what they have be improved. I have no desire to use any of the email programs (Versa, Chatter or what not) so I too would like to see AOL improved, but I doubt it will be. Yahoo mobile works really well and is what AOL mobile should be so we wouldn't need the AOL program at all except for IM's which we then wouldn't be wondering about a program upgrade.

Very authoritative post. Wholly inaccurate, but authoritative. Firstly you dont "create whatever" in Chatter that effects AOL, rather its the other way around. Ever since AOL started their open mail service, AOL members have been able to use any email client to access their email. Chatter, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. No longer are AOL members tied into using only the AOL software or the aol.com website.

I personally use Chatter on my Treo, Thunderbird on my laptop and Outlook Express on my desktop. No matter which device I use, I have full access to all my AOL folders and my mail and folders are perfectly in-sync between all three devices as well as the AOL software and aol.com. Remember, AOL uses IMAP for their email so all messages, folders, etc reside on their servers, not in the email client.

I will give you one thing and thats reporting spam. Using anything other then the AOL software or aol.com does not give you that super high tech, uber useful "report spam" button so if thats a deal breaker for you, stick with the AOL software.

I too wish AOL would update their software, but I wont hold my breath for it. I was an AOL member for over 10 years and finally chucked their service. While I still have and use my AOL email account (converted to AIM when I quit AOL), I have migrated the bulk of my email needs to Everyone.net and could not be happier.

If your happy with AOL as it is and dont want to try something else, well then more power to you my friend. Unlike you, I like having an alternative.

well thanks for the detail and the lesson. I did know you can imap aol already. It's the folder issue I was unclear on. So if I have about 4 folders created in the aol software for "saved on aol", I can create them in whatever email program on the treo, and when I move them there on the treo, it moves them there on aol servers also? Or does the email program automatically create them when I map it to my aol adr?

Either way, it hasn't been an issue for me. I don't do things that extensively when I'm on the treo (at least for now). I just save that stuff for when I'm home.

I actually think aol's spam filter works pretty well, maybe too well because if I just delete good messages without reading them consistently, it will start putting them in the spam folder. My inbox is relatively spam free now unlike my yahoo mail. I'll throw two messages from the same adr into spam and still get more messages from them in the same day in the inbox.

I am happy to help when needed. In regard to your AOL folders, yes, your folder list in AOL will indeed be fully accessable in either Thunderbird, Outlook Express or Chatter. Remember, these folders exist on the AOL IMAP servers. Also, if you use Thunderbird or Outlook Express for your desktop mail client, you can create new folders without ever having to sign into AOL and these folders will be saved on the AOL server. While you cant create new server side folders with Chatter, you still have access to all your folders for either filing away messages or making a specific folder a mailbox. Again, sice everything is server based, your messages are there when you need them no matter how you need to access your AOL mail.

Another bonus of IMAP is the realtime receipt of email. In many instances my AOL mail hits my Treo before it hits my other clients. If you want to get your feet wet and see what your missing, I would be happy to help you out.
