I guess this may be why no Discovery 645s can be found in any brick and mortar stores:

Plantronics is releasing a refresh of the Discovery 640 and also releasing a Discovery 655.

Looks like there's a Discovery 665 as well. It's in the Discovery 655's manual:

Too bad that no improvements have been made between the 645 and the 655/665.

I'm sure there are other improvements. I mean how would you know it's not out yet. Hopefully, the headset 'clicks' into the pocket charger now unlike the 640 / 645.

You never got back to us about all of the in-ear headsets that work better than the AX2 Pro. http://discuss.treocentral.com/showt...5&page=4&pp=20

    Thanks for that link.

Also, are you still hung up on that other thread? < < Edited out by Septimus > >

I should have clarified what I was talking about. I'm talking about "out of the box" quality regarding voice on both ends, connection quality w/ the phone, etc.. The AX2 "Pro." is not even a real product. It's something that is put together with parts you have to buy separately from the headset AND you even need to have soldering skills to put it all together.

Finally, I am not the only one that agrees that the AX2's bluetooth reception is shoddy.

As to the other improvements in the 655 that you're sure of, could you please list them?

I would be interested in hearing about new Discoveries (Discoverys? Does a brand-name have different rules for pluralizing?) myself. The differences do seem pretty vague.

The thread that I linked to has the best information on the new headsets. It seems like a mostly cosmetic "upgrade." If there was anything significant, I'd bet that the 640/645/Ultralight owners would be pretty upset.

The 640 I have now "clicks" into its pocket charger-the one I had initially did not (that is in fact how it got lost but that's a different story).

I don't see any major differences aside from the cosmetic right now,so I'm not too upset. And actually,I don't really like the way the 655 looks,I prefer the look of the 645/Ultralight/640.If the "refresh" of the 640 also added DSP,then I might be inclined to do otherwise-but as it stands, the supposedly improved battery life is nice, but I've grown used to carrying the AAA charger, and charging while in my car now that I have the adapter pieces that match my cell phone chargers (which I was about to buy before I replaced my lost 640-the tips came with the new 640 I bought).

Interesting. What's the date code on the bottom of your 640's box?
  12. #12
I wouldn't be able to tell you-I just tossed the box last week and it went out with the recycling on Saturday morning.I bought the second 640 about two weeks ago.The second one also included the Treo and RAZR charging adapters -which my first one did not.The first one did not click into the charging pouch-which is why when riding on a NYC bus that stopped short it flew out of my purse -yet the charger pocket was still clipped on securely to the same location-by the time I realized I'd lost the headset it was too late to do anything concrete to attempt to recover it.I purchased the first one sometime at the beginning of June either before or after my birthday.

The one I got on eBay says Jun06 and it does include the Treo and RAZR charging adaptors. It doesn't click securely into the charging adapter though.

Mine didn't at first-which I didn't really notice until the other day that it could click more securely into the pocket charger.I was reading about the new headsets, and that they vibrate when in charger, when I stopped to think and remembered that was a feature with the 640-and then wondered why it was that it had never vibrated in the pocket -and I pushed a bit more -and felt it "click"-if I had done that with the first one, perhaps I never would've had to get a second one !

The Discovery 655 is available frome Headsets Direct:

They're an authorized Plantronics retailer. At $107.00 the 655 is tempting.

I just noticed that my Discovery 640 doesn't have the Plantronics logo embedded / etched in the button at the end of the headset. All other pictures I have seen of it on the internet show that it should have the logo on this button...

I think that you got scammed.

Ok, just got off a live chat with Plantronics. Gave them the date code and some other info. from the headset and they said that all Discovery 640's made recently do not have this logo on the button.

So yours in legit then? That's good news.

The new ones have a talk time of 3 hours! That sucks. Stick with your 640. It doesn't have DSP, but you get longer talk time because of it.

That's what the rep. said. Mine has a fairly recent date code (Jun06) and the agent said that all the 640s from that date code and on do not have the logo on the button.

That's good news w/ the battery life. I didn't realize the DSP shortens the battery life so much.
