A rant followed by a question, followed by a comment

    Rant:
This is my second 700p. The first one I dropped on a carpet from a height of about 3 feet and it just went out (speaker and microphone stopped working). Both had had pretty bad reception, my friends and co-workers complain all the time of poor reception especially when I am in the car. Given the Treo size you'd think they have a decently sized antenna in there, but apparently not. My friend's Motorala E815 phone has had way better reception, and I had to borrow it to make phone calls when I was in a fairly small town in upstate NY over the weekend.

    Question:
We were also camping where phones don't work at all. This is about 4-5 miles from an area where phones actually work (badly for me). Will getting any sized (portable) antenna work? I was looking on ebay and you can get a 40inch 11db antenna for under 40$, but what does it really give me? BTW, my friend (with the E815) claimed he was getting almost 1 bar on reception on 'extended network', but he could not make any calls or receive messages.

    Comment:
The experience this weekend (and overall 'slowness' frustration with the treo) almost makes me want to 'add' an e815 to my account (isn't it $10 for another line?), or ditch the treo all together.. As a phone it just sucks.

An antenna works for me at home, where I live in the mountains. It adds between one and two bars. Frankly, however, there's no way of knowing whether an antenna will work in your situation. If there's no reception in a given area, there's simply no reception, external antenna or not.

Can you give a model number or something for the antanna you use? I would like to get on for my car as travel on the interstate is not always phone friendly.
    Thanks

Wilson lets you try any of their stuff and gives you 30 days to return for full refund IIRC.
