Hi everyone. Im from canada and was given a treo 650 by a friend who works at a cell phone store. They were using it as a floor display but ended up giving it to me once the new 700s came in. When i was given the phone i was told i needed to unlock it as it is againts company rules to take and give the phones out which ment i could not use any sim cards i had. I have read alot of posts on the net saying that the phones from rogers my actually only be rogers branded and not locked. Is there any way of telling if this is true? I would like to use this phone but want to make sure before i spend the money to go unlock it. Thanks for all your help.

Borrow a SIM card from someone on another network and stick it in. As soon as you turn the phone on, it will tell you if it's locked or not. If you log onto their network (on their number) without problems it's not locked.

For what it's worth. I have a Roger's Treo 650 and it IS locked. I can't even put a Fido card in it (and Rogers owns Fido).

PS: If you need to unlock it. Google "Unlock Treo 650". You'll see lots of options that cost anywhere from about $10-$30.

If your non-Rogers SIM cards work in the phone, it isn't locked.

Thats what i figured i had to do, tho all my friends are on rogers or bell which does not use sim, i will just have to keep looking i guess. Treo-mike is yours rogers branded? When i first got the phone it had the rogers logo on phone startup but i did a hard reset and now there is no evidance that it was even a rogers product, is this normal? Its running ROM 1.13.

Sorry, i forgot to add...has anyone ever tried updating their ROM with the unlocked treo 650 ROM update from P1? What diffrences does the unlocked ROM have from a service provider ROM that would possibly damage the phone? Thanks.

ALL Rogers phones are subsidy "locked" so if you put a competitors' SIM card in it, you will get a message that the phone is locked and can't use the SIM.

If you can find a visitor to Canada (like a tourist) who can allow you to "borrow" his SIM for the sake of "testing" this, you will find out that it is indeed "locked". Rogers has never been nice enough to "unlock" their phones and even if you purchase the phone outright from them for an arm and a leg, it's still "locked".

You usually spend from about $20-$40 for unlocking it so considering that you got it for free, I don't think that it's too much to pay.

If you are going to be using it on Rogers' network, you shouldn't be installing the update for the "unlocked" GSM phone since they aren't the same. Many carriers have settings that are specific for their network and to apply an update that isn't specifically for that carrier and the carrier brand of phone may cause more problems.

Of course, I'm not particularly sure but just to be on the safe side.

What Treo 700 model are you referring to? After all Rogers.com doesn't list any Treo 700 models being sold by the company or their authorized dealer locations. Is it possible your friend misinformed you and is under the impression Palm sells a GSM version of the Treo 700W and Treo 700P? Currently Palm only sells the Treo 700 in CDMA, not GSM. GSM is used by both Rogers and Fido in Canada where as CDMA is used by Telus and Bell.

ATT Rogers Treo 650 are UNLOCKED. the box says Rogers, but they run on ROW firmware and are unlocked from default. They are also palmOne branded, and not carrier logo'ed

    - I know, I came across many of them.

Dark_Knight you are correct. For whatever reason the store my friend works at (not a Rogers owned store) decided to bring out a new 650 as a display for Rogers. The 650 I have is in pretty rough shape, there are a lot of case scratches so maybe they wanted a fresh one for display. My 650 works perfect, i am not one to complain about the outside appearance as I got the phone for free and if I wanted to could probably find another case on eBay to get.

Maceyr I do agree with you, I am happy to spend the money to have it unlocked as the phone has cost me so little so far, I just wanted to know if there were another ways to unlock as in some posts individuals have paid to unlock it but after a hard reset it becomes locked again. I just want to test if this is true

Trim81, have you tested this with other providers sim cards or has Rogers or palm come out and said that they are unlocked from company? I have seen other (american) providerís phones and they normally have logo branding on the case and in the firmware for the phone. I just found it odd that after a hard reset my phone looks as if it came straight from P1.

If you've paid for an unlock code, you should always write it down and stick it under your battery just in case you accidentally clear the code. It shouldn't get reset on a hard reset (even a zero-out reset), but you can accidentally clear it by entering codes incorrectly (ie: entering something that it thinks is an unlock code).

Anyways, you shouldn't pay more than $15 for an unlock these days.

My Treo is not branded. But it is locked. It just has a PalmOne logo on it. However, after the last software update, I started getting a Rogers logo on startup rather than a generic Palm one.
