I'm not sure if the antenna that zoti is doing can be that short, unless they totally redesign the antenna strip. This is the shortest that I can go using the original component, can considering the treo slot space for the antenna.

I'll pay about $30 or so if it isn't any longer than the Photo Shop concept and reception is equal. Please tell us how to order.

Off topic but...is there anyway to replace the headphone jack with a real one in it's existing location? I suppose the 3.5 jack mod that's being put into the stock anttenas would not be possible with this? I'd be willing to invest approx. $100 in my 650 if I could get a real jack and considerably less antenna. If anyone is interested in making these mods for a fee, or knows of a company that does, just let me know.

There are several reasons why a 650 is best for where I live and work, including lack of EVDO and the cost of new Sprint Vision/Modem plans.

Why not just get a converter? It's a simple little wire to convert 2.5 to 3.5 and it was only 5 bucks. But if you want, there is a mod someone did, complicated though, i think. It's at treotricks

Holy Crap! You are my new Treo Hero. I have me and another guy here who would buy one in a heart beat (hope you are willing to ship to odd places ) btw, the last post of yours said it would be a couple of weeks 'till we see a prototype. Whats up?
p.s., about the internal antenna, its actually a flat piece of plastic wrapped around a plastic post with the rubber on top of it. if you can take that plastic and bend it over and down rather than around a post, it shouldn't be too arduous to make a small nub antenna. it shouldnt require a restructuring of the actual antenna plastic piece. Also, someone mentioned that CDMA and GSM work on the same frequencies. They most certainly do NOT. That is why they are two different networks. You’ll find the most commonly occupy the 900MHz and 1,800MHz bands (in Europe and Asia) and the 850MHz and 1,900MHz (sometimes referred to as 1.9GHz) bands in North America and Latin America. CDMA systems operate in the 800/1900 MHz bandwidths most of the time. I am not knowledgeable enough to know whether a different antenna would be needed if you were a gsm user, for example, outside of the U.S. due to the slightly different frequency requirements. Anyone know this?
    Thanks!

The CDMA network uses 850mhz and 1900mhz. Quad band GSM is 850/900/1800/1900mhz. Therefore the same antenna will work for both CDMA and GSM phones.

After my original antenna broke I got a CDMA replacement for my GSM phone. It has been working fine for the last 2 months.

As for the development of the product, I'm still working on it.

me too - i would buy the antennae (only) replacement if it was around 15-25 US dollars ..... but would REALLY be VERY willing to pay more if it had a lanyard attachment point and especiallly if it had a 3.5 headpiece socket inside it .... $100 is probably a bit much .... but i would definately pay $50 - $75 for all of the ëxtras" - overseas postage would have to be reasonable - i think that many would buy this

..... please make it happen soon ... and please work out a shipping and payment system so that overseas buyers (australia esp ) can purchase this product

I actually have replaced 2.5 mm jacks with 3.5 mm ones. It is difficult and I would personally not do it for less than $200. You need to modify the jack, solder it in place and cut away part of the Treo's plastic case so that it fits. The end result is a very rugged jack since it is sandwiched between the motherboard and case and not just hanging on the motherboard.

Not sure what the small stubby antenna looks like inside, but there might be room for a 3.5 mm jack. if you want, you could replace the external antenna with a 3.5 mm jack and go with an internal antenna.

P.S. That antenna with an audio jack inside is a "patent pending" design...

    Both ideas are good but...

The original antenna and what holds it in the phone cannot support a lanyard. Even with the shorter antenna I wouldn't trust it to hold the phone. All that keeps the antenna in place is one screw.

As for the audio jack. It's a great idea but it will require a lot more modification to connect the wires inside the phone. Therefore it's a no go. I'm trying to keep this project simple and make it possible for the end user to easly replace the antenna by himself.

I would definitly take one too.

If you are concerned about radiation to the head, the Treo really isn't for you. It has a digital SAR level of 1.51 with 1.6 being the legal maximum in the US (2W/kg in Europe). This puts it on the top ten worst phones out there (every other single one being a Motorola).

If you want a smartphone and are concerned about radiation, the sidekick is the only way to go with a sar level of .27

SAR = Specific Absorption rate and is the amount of RF energy absorbed into your head and body. It is measure in watts per kilogram. There are two numbers for each phone - the SAR level for your head and for your body.

I would definitely buy one of these! Since I want PalmOS and NOT WM5, there is virtually no incentive for me upgrade to the new Palms. A nice mod like this would breath some new life (not to mention pocket space) into my 650 which continues to handle all my smartphone tasks without fault.

As for radiation, just get a bluetooth headset. Problem solved.

Count me in. I'd be willing to pay in the $40 range if the end product looks as good as your photoshop and the reception is as you anticipate. Great work so far!!

Mobiles increase radio power (and therefore the radiation they give out) to counteract low signal.

As such, I'd be curious if this mod acheives the same level of reception - at the same radio power level - as the original antenna.

i.e. is the new antenna as efficient as the old one at the hardware level, not just what the user perceives? (which could be pushed up by increasing radio power, which would be nice to avoid - as it's already been pointed out, the Treo has a pretty bad SAR rating!)

If it is, then great... I'm interested!

Maybe easier if he accepts paypal.

I plan on accepting both CC and PayPal. I will ship anywhere in the world as long as you are willing to pay the shipping charges.

I'm setting up a website as I write this message down. It will be up in a week or so and I hope to have the prototypes of the antenna in my hands soon.

Is this a Short-Antenna buildoff or something??

We've already seen what Ddeath can come up with, but what about Zoti?

Competition is always better than a monopoly... lets see what you both can come up with!
