I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but I just can't find it (I used the Search, really). What's the best way to upgrade from the 650? I have to keep my username. Is it as simple as dropping it in the cradle and doing a sync? Then, just remove the apps that are not functioning properly?

No. The best method is as follows:
    1. Hotsync your 650 one last time
    2. Rename your /Palm/<username>/Backup directory (to, say, Backup.old)
    3. Hard reset the 700p (just to be sure)
    4. Hotsync the 700p

This will load your PIM data, with your current username, but no 3rd party software. Install your applications, one or two at a time, after checking the developers' sites for updates and/or consulting the forums here at TC; test the resulting configuration for a day or two before the next batch of installs.

Thanks very much, Bill. I was hoping not to have to reset all my prefs, but I guess that's not going to happen. Thanks again.

I was able to beam stuff like Blazer's bookmark file, the file containing my Favorites buttons setup, and others from my 650 to my 700p. Many of the preferences files have obvious names and can be beamed using Resco Explorer or 3X Commander.

Also, prior to starting the 700p setup, I synched the 650 one last time and then renamed that directory to keep for archival purposes. That would also be another location for you to select individual files from to either synch to the 700p or copy to a SD card.

Does anyone know whether we need to reinstall Palm Desktop from the CD that comes with the 700p? Or can we use the same version that was used with the 650?

I have a 600 and I am getting a 700p tomorrow. I backup the 600 using BackupMan from Bits 'n Bolts software. Will I be able to just restore my last 600 backup to the 700p and go from there? I realize that some of the apps may not work and will have to delete, buy new versions and re-install.

My biggest concern is porting over the mail that has been archived to the card using Snappermail. It would be very cool if this worked.

    Thanks.

The instructions say to uninstall the old software and install the new.

Many people have tried to simply restore from backups and most have had problems. A good idea is to perform a sync right before going to the 700, then rename your backup folder something like "backupold". Then, once you've set up the 700, you can move things one at a time to the 700. Do a search for some threads about older apps that don't work with the 700 or that developers have updated to make them compatible with the 700.

If the old software is in F:\Palm, then I install the new to F:\PalmOne .... next upgrade back to F:\Palm.....thisn way I keep all th old files if I need to go back.....once all is stable I empty out the directoiry and leave it there for next device.

I am not sure I know what you mean by "next upgrade back to F:\Palm"? If you mean copy the applications over one by one, I guess the challenge is that it is hard to tell what all the files are that need to go over since some apps do not name all the files consistently.

The following was my personal method of upgrading from the Treo 650 to 700p that worked for me...your mileage may vary of course:

    1) Used my T650 to beam all addresses, memos, and tasks to my 700p (from the Contacts, Memo, and Tasks apps of the T650).

    2) Used FileZ on my T650 to beam "DatebookDB" to my 700p (DatebookDB is my entire calendar folder--I use DateBk 5 personally instead of the built-in calendar app, but don't know if that makes any difference).

    3) I also beamed one application called "ChangeName" ver 3.2 to my 700p. I opened the app "ChangeName" and added my user name to it, which matches the same hotsynch user name when I installed the Palm Desktop CD (see below).

At this point, my new 700p now has all my primary information in the following apps: Contacts, Calendar, Memos, Tasks. This was all from simply beaming the files from my Treo 650 to my 700p. By the way, I used FileZ to beam "DatebookDB" (my calendar folder) because this was the only method I could figure out for beaming the calendar file.

    4) As an extra backup precaution, I hotsynched my Treo 650 information to my laptop computer in case anything went wrong.

    5) I then entirely deleted my old Palm Desktop app for the Treo 650 using Window's uninstall program. I also went to "My Computer" and entirely deleted the PalmOne folder. I also deleted my old version of Documents To Go on the desktop.

    6) I then installed the new Palm Desktop app for the 700p using the supplied CD that came in the box. I also installed Documents To Go for the 700p from the same CD. I also added my user hotsynch name to the Palm Desktop app.

    7) I also replaced the old hotsynch cords with the new supplied hotsynch cords, and plugged the cords into my desktop computer. (Note, the new hotsynch A/C charger with cord is smaller in size than the previous one).

    8) I then plugged the hotsynch cable into my new 700p (with all the previously beamed information including "ChangeName" app with my User Name added to it) and I then held my breath and pressed the hotsynch button for the first time. Lo and behold, everything started hotsynching perfectly, and my desktop computer recognized my new 700p!! A few minutes or so later, all my information was fully synchronized between desktop and handheld. I then let go of my breath...whew!!

    9) I then proceeded to beam apps from my Treo 650 to my 700p one by one. I started with ChatterEmail first, and quickly realized I had to update to the newest version. Same with LauncherX which also required the newest version to work right. All in all, I would say that approximately 70% of my Treo 650 apps work fine with the new 700p, but I had to update to the newest versions for the remainder 30% of the apps I use. At this point, one week into it, I can say that my 700p is now about 99% up to date with everything I previously had on my Treo 650. The last thing I need to add is PdaNet which I'm holding out because this might prove challenging.

Anyway, I can say for certainty that the above method worked for me. I don't know if it's the best method, but it worked!

When I used a Vx, the desktop software was installed into F:\Palm. By installing the 650's Palm Desktop into F:|PalmOne, I was able toeave my entire Vx setup untouched and safe in case I decided I didn't want to keep the 650.

Having decided to keep the 650, I wiped the F:\palm directory out since after giving away thye Vx it was of no use to me. Now when I try the 800 or whatever, so as not to screw with my 650 desktop files in F:\PalmOne, I will install the 800 desktop software into F:\palm ... if I don't keep the 800, I can revert to my old 650 w/o hassle as the directory remains untouched and a simple reinstall of the 650's desktop to that directory will leave all customizations in place.

    In short:

    1. Create new install directory
    2. Copy the four*.dat files from the "old" PD directory to the "new" PD directory and that transfers all my contacts, memos, calendar and todos
    3. HotSync
    4. Install UM
    5. Install apps one at a time

As for app installation.....I leave them where they be in the old desktop directories. I keep my original downloads in R:\Downloads\Treo\<applicationname> directories.

After checking for latest updates and compatability, I reload them fresh from the R:\Downloads\Treo\ subdirectories
