All: just wanted to let you know that pairing a laptop to the 700p via Bluetooth and surfing at highspeed with EVDO via that pair is WORKING!

Its not that hard. The basics are:

    - you need to have the VZW Unlimited Data Plan associated with your 700p account
    - you need to have the VZW Unlimited Tethered Broadband Access Plan associated with your 700p account (a lot of CSR's don't seem to know what this is or where to find it. Don't let them transfer you to the VZW DTSG because they can't make changes to your account)
    - pair your 700p to your Bluetooth laptop
    - you need the VZAccess software. I couldn't find it on the Verizon-supplied CDROMs so I found it here http://vzw.smithmicro.com/download/index.html (thanks to someone who I can't remember on another Treo board). To download, select Macintosh then PC Card then 5740. Mount the DMG, install the software, go through setup, that's it.
    - Setup will auto-detect the 700p (as long as you have the Bluetooth/laptop pair already setup)

    Then just click Connect.

    It's really that simple.

Thanks to all those other brave souls who paved the way for me getting to this point.

    My 700p+OSX mini-review:
I am in hog heaven. This phone is everything the 650 should have been. Integrates perfectly with my mac, my surfing speeds aren't bad (peak: 528 Kbps/sec, sustained: 350 Kbps/sec) - the phone itself has fixed all my less favourite things about the 650: crap keyboard, girly feel, crap memory. This is awesome. I will be a productive MONSTER now.

Oh -- and yes if you are surfing/emailing etc, and someone calls -- Verizon nicely pauses the data connection and lets the call ring through. I have verified this myself. It's legit. And it's awesome.

As I understand it, USB to Powerbook/OSX tethering is not currentl supported .

    P.S.
There may be a problem with connecting on the Laptop via the 700p *IF* the 700p is already connected to the network. That seems to result in a kernel panic (hard reset required) on my PBG4 1.67Mhz (10.4.6). This has happened to me twice now and I am trying to nail down the cause.

Bottom line: if you get a kernel panic when you try do the final connect as noted above, the next time -- disconnect from the network on your 700p (Preferences-->Network-->Disconnect). Then try again.

I can also verify that the network is paused and calls DO come through while I was actively using my EVDO connection via Bluetooth/Treo 700p (Macintosh on Verizon). I was pinging throughout the whole thing, packets were dropped while the call rang on my 700p, but they pick right up again as soon as the call is over -- or you have hit ignore and sent them to voicemail.

Works as advertised. Lovin' it even more.

Actually you don't need the VZAccess software at all. You can just use the modem connect icon in the menu bar after you've set up the network prefs appropriately.

You sir - are correct!!! I had not opened up Internet Connect since I had installed VZAccess. I think you need to install VZAccess though, so the correct modem drivers are installed.

Wow, I've been unable to duplicate your success. Is your Mac a PowerPC or Intel? My Mac won't recognize my 700p when using the VZ Access Manager, even though it will recognize the 700p when synching via bluetooth. Strange?

Maybe I can try this. Would you tell me what Modem you chose, as well as what goes under account name and password. I don't know of any password for my account. I assume that telephone number is my mobile number, correct? Thanks for the help.

does anyone know if pdanet works with the 700p, and therefor you do not need to have the xtra service. this is what i currently use with my 650 /w verizon unlimited dataplan. works great, would be fantastic with evdo speeds. don't care if i am tethered by usb cable or via bluetooth.

I never installed VZwaccess, I don't think. Or did I? Can't remember. I'm using the only modem driver on my machine with Verizon in the title, which is called Verizon Support (PC 5220). The Wireless Data support rep said that everybody should have one, as it comes with the OS. I don't know how true that is, just telling you what he said.

Supposedly, if you use a PC and have a tethering account, you don't need any extra software. However, PDAnet is working on a new version that is said will eliminate the need to have a tethering account. But in any case, PDAnet only works on PCs, not Macs. Jimmie Geddes says that there's another company working on software for Macs, but it's not out yet.

I'm having the same problem! VZaccess isn't recognizing the device and the bluetooth modem doesn't seem to be working either. When I called verizon DTS, everybody i spoke to seemed to be completely clueless and one guy said that there is no tethering solution for Macs at this time. This seems to directly contradict what i'm reading online right now though...

I'm signed up for the unlimited broadband access tethering plan so it should be working. I'm running off a powerbook G4.

Anybody have any clue what might be wrong?

I've been successful with bluetooth DUN without ever installing the Verizon software. Make sure you have paired them from the bluetooth system preferences and that the Treo has been recognized as supporting dialup networking. If that doesn't show when looking at the bluetooth devices in the panel, select the Treo and click the configure button on the right. It should find the right services.

FYI, I had originally told them to sign me up for the broadband connect service but they didn't do it. I had to call to get them to add it and it took two different people to figure out how to do it. Login to Verizon and check your account. If you don't see a service called "BROADBANDACCESS CONNECT UNLIM PDARIM" then you don't have it. It won't work without this.

Thanks for the help! Despite being told by several customer service reps that I had the right service, it doesn't look like i do. Just in case--for the bluetooth modem settings: should i be putting in "#777" or just "777" for the number?

    thanks again
  18. #18
Finally. Got it to work...I think a lot of people's trouble is stemming from the fact that that customer service reps are telling people they have all the services they need when in fact that haven't added (and don't know how to add) the tethering service. It shows up as BBA CONNECT UNL on my features page.

So I've added all the information I got from all the different forums on one write-up that is Verizon specific but which I hope will help.

Go check it out if you're still stuck

Does anyone know if the VZW Manager software enables USB tethering on Mac OS X (I have bluetooth working fine without it)? If so, has anyone installed this on a MacBook Pro? I'm reluctant to mess up the system with software messing with drivers.
