I finally figured out how to make the :shortcut: symbol appear FIRST in the ALT list for the S button (instead of last). http://discussion.treocentral.com/im...es/biggrin.gif

Just install the following overlay file (HsExtensions2.0_enUS_new.prc) to the RAM of your Treo using Filez and perform a soft reset. The :shortcut: symbol will now have swapped places with the :beta: symbol which usually appears first in the list (god knows why....)

I've also attached the 2 files required to edit your shortcuts from the Prefs panel. Just copy to RAM and soft reset, as before.

Thanks for the new extensions file! It works as advertised.

Glad it works. It's not often I play with hex editors but this had been bugging me for ages.

You can also use ShortCut5 to create and use shortcuts (up to 100). It uses '.' instead of the shortcut symbol.

This is great stuff! Was wondering what happened to the shortcuts. Thanks!

I've heard reports of ShortCut5 slowing the Treo down especially when using processor hungry apps like games. My solution uses the standard system already running on the Treo so won't actually slow the Treo down at all!

The symbol that looks like a beta is actually a German "sharp s" or "eszett." It is replaced by "ss" when not available. Thus you might see the word "big" as either "große" or "grosse." I found more info than I wanted to know by seraching Wapedia for that symbol:

I regret to say that HsExtensions2.0_enUS_new.prc sent my Cingular Treo 650 into an endless loop of attempting to boot. System reset did not work; I ended up having to do a hard reset. (Thank the gods for BackupMan!)

I double-checked my system, and tried it again. Same result.

It's doubtless due to something in my set of programs or my configuration. It's hard to tell if this is related, but according to my system error log, the crash occurred while running "unknown application: ExpansionMgr.c, Line:398, no non-removable slot driver installed."

Let me know if I can be of help.

Did you install it to the phone or to the expansion card? I don't think it will work from the expansion card.
Is your phone set to a language other than US English? Since this is a US English overlay, you shouldn't use it with any other language set.
You could try renaming the file to simply 'HsExtensions2.0_enUS.prc' which is what the original file is called in the ROM. There isn't really any difference between the original and the altered one, just two numbers (that point to certain symbols) swapped around in the code.

Installed to the phone, and my phone is set to American English. Redownloaded, renamed, reinstalled - same result.

It clearly doesn't play with something else I'm running - perhaps TealScript? Not to worry, one of the reasons I use TealScript is to get around the shortcomings of the keyboard.

Aha! That's probably it. Tealscript maybe can't handle the presence of 2 HsExtensions PRCs, whereas the Treo normally ignores the one in ROM if there's one in the RAM.
    Maybe.

    Maybe.
Put it in ROM (replacing the original) and see if it works.

    Good idea.

At some point, I'm planning to install a custom ROM, removing some assorted Cingularities and replacing a couple others, but it's not something I really want to do in a hurry. I'm inordinately fond of my Treo, and would rather not turn it into a shiny silver brick.

ShortCut5 can be enabled or disabled for a particular list of apps (like games).

True. I just prefer the classic Palm shortcuts, like in the good old Palm IIIc days!

I have no idea! Check to see if the 700p has a file called HsExtensions2.0_enUS.prc and if so, you should be alright.....

What about just the shortcut files? would they work on the 700P? I am not so much interested in moving the shortcut symbol (by the way, there are about 4 different HS Extensions files on my vzw 700P).

    Thanks.
