Hi all,

My coworker asked for a way to send SMS for free. I didn't really feel like making a java app, so I created this little web page. Combined with sharklinks, this little local page is pretty close to what I could create, but took a lot less effort (to write) and if anyone wants to make changes, it's HTML. Anyway, on with it.

http://tinyurl.com/rdeso

You could of course send email to the gateway, use each person's web gateways, etc, I wanted to make an all-carriers-in-one method, with a length field that works with Blazer, of course!

Installation
Modify the following lines in the file:
<!-- ***Change the value to your phone number as below -->
<input type="hidden" name="myPhoneNumber" value="917-555-5555">
<!-- ***Change the value to your carrier from the list above -->
<input type="hidden" id="senderCarrier" name="senderCarrier" value="sprint">
...
<!-- ***Change the values to your favorite contacts in the format below -->
<select name="contactlist" id="contactlist">
<option value="917-555-5556^^sprint">Daryl</option>
<option value="917-555-5556^^verizon">Cagan</option>
</select><br>
You must preprogram your SMS receiving contacts with their number and carrier. Make sure the carrier names are exactly as shown in the list within the code below. Numbers have to be in the XXX-XXX-XXXX format and it must be separated from the carrier name with ^^ as shown.

If you want to use the sharklink below, you must store the html code as sprinttxt.htm stored in the SD card under PALM\Programs\Slinks
Otherwise, you can put it in your SD card and create a bookmark in Blazer to file:///SDPATH

Usage
Type your message and send.
- Press the length button to get current length. I recommend you keep the length at around 120.
- One nice thing about this is that if your message is too long, it will split it up into parts. But don't do that unless you hate the person or they have unlimited TXTS.
- The sender is marked (from what I've seen) as yournumber@emailgateway.com, which is nice since they should be able to respond to the sms directly.
- When you send, you'll get a download notifier. It's an XML response, so blazer will ask to save it. Just hit No. This is your indication the message has sent.

Not the simplest to get going, for sure, but once you got it set up, it's nice to have.

Below is the source code to the html file. you can save this or use the attachment below, rename sprinttxt.txt to sprinttxt.htm
<html>
<head>
<script language=JavaScript>
function fillSize()
{
var b = document.input.message.value;
document.input.sizeField.value = b.length;
}

function prepareData()
{
var myPhone = document.input.myPhoneNumber.value;
var sendToString = document.input.contactlist.value;
var sendToArray = sendToString.split("^^");
var sendToNumber = sendToArray[0];
var sendToCarrier = sendToArray[1];

document.input.carrier.value = sendToCarrier;

var toPhoneArray=sendToNumber.split("-");
document.input.areacode.value = toPhoneArray[0];
document.input.prefix.value = toPhoneArray[1];
document.input.linenumber.value = toPhoneArray[2];

var myPhoneArray=myPhone.split("-");
document.input.senderAreaCode.value = myPhoneArray[0];
document.input.senderPrefix.value = myPhoneArray[1];
document.input.senderLineNumber.value = myPhoneArray[2];
return true;
}
</script>
</head>

You write the CGI to it as well? Curious.. Although it's likely pretty simple; send email using the carrier indiciated from the post.

Looks nice, I might have to set this up myself.

I've never heard of "Vazu", but I've always used http://wwtxt.com/ for my free SMS messages.

There are problems with both vazu and wwtxt.com:

wwtxt: Text Messages are sent from the email address "no-reply@wwtxt.com".
-ie, Receiver cannot reply to the message you sent or identify you.

vazu: Appends each message ("Free texting at http://www.vazu.com/text") to each message. Also, I tried responding, it didn't work, but at least it came in with mynumber@vazu.com, so somewhat identifyable.

I did want to see if anyone had found any other method of sending online that was better, so thanks for your suggestions so far.

wwtxt.com or http://www.webtowireless.com does in fact support reply capabilities.. email forwards are also supported... all you have to do is use the contact form to get in touch with the admin..

From the site

* Text Messages are sent from the email address "no-reply@wwtxt.com".
* The "from" box is appended to your message.
* Recipiants currently can not reply to messages. This feature is being developed.
* Message content is not logged.

Yes, that's what I have on the main page. But I'm telling you that you can. All that is needed is some info.
1. desired username
2. your choice of domain name.. i have about 6 available (can provide list if interested)
3. your wireless number
4. your wireless carrier.

i'm doing these manually. this will all be automated and available to the public with the release of webtowireless 2.0. w2w 2.0 will have contact lists, group messaging, reply capabilities, content based texts (breaking news, daily stock summaries, etc.), and more. also, w2w 2.0 will require user accounts and anonymouse texts will not be supported. anonymous texts will move to http://sendfreetextmessages.us
