Hey everyone. So here's the deal. I had a friend put some of his medical programs onto my Treo 650 but he wound up putting WAY more than I wanted plus Isilo and some other readers on top of it. The Treo then started resetting constantly, which was resolved.

After doing a hard reset, how do I sync only stuff that I want back onto my 650 without all of that extra stuff syncing too? I synced once originally and everything synced onto the 650 but I don't want all that crap.

There must be SOME way to sync what I want and discard/delete the rest.

    Help!

Delete all unwanted files from your desktop /Palm/<username>/Backup directory, perform the hard reset and then hotsync.

Are the desktop files all in the one file I save them to? Because I could swear that I deleted some files from the treo download folder and they still synced up to the handheld.

    *edit*

After re-reading your help, I see that I have to delete from four diff parts. I get the desktop and Handheld (Palm) parts, but how do I delete stuff from my user name and backup directory?

No, there aren't "four diff parts"...just one. I'm referring to one directory on your desktop computer, named "Backup", which is a sub-directory of one whose name is similar to your Hotsync or user name, which itself is a sub-directory of Palm (or Palmone or...perhaps this is named something else on your desktop?) and is probably a sub-directory of "Program Files".

For example, my user name is "Bill Gamble" and my backup directory is
    C:\Program Files\palmOne\GambleB\Backup

Do what Bill says. But I think you are better off deleting the entire contents of the ...\Backup directory and re-installing your 3rd party applications. You'll still have your Contacts, Memos, Calendar and Tasks (these are stored elsewhere).

If you start clean (no 3rd party applications) and re-install, you'll get a fresh new Saved Preferences file without entries from applications you no longer want. A good clean Saved Preferences file is always good (it is like the Registry in Windows.. has lots of important information).

To throw an additional thought into this, have you looked at getting a good backup program that does routine/scheduled backups of your device to the SD card? There are several of them. Once you get the device set up the way you want it, then do a manual backup as a base to return to when the need arises. Ben

Thanks for all the advice guys. I figured out the backup file thing late last night and wound up just deleting Palm from my computer entirely and reinstalling the disk and hotsync.

While manually deleting things, I deleted some hotsync/update file someting or other which made the sync fail so I decided to hard reset and delete/reinstall everything as if I just got the 650.

I retained the files in which I had stored my downloaded applicatons so really the only thing to do over is the contacts list which I'll get around to later today. I've yet to be a power user so I didn't lose all that much besides that.

My wanted applications are reinstalled/synced over now, regsitered and all is good again.

Thanks again. It was all very helpful and calming to me as I was BEYOND annoyed last night.
