It appears TealPoint software is releasing competition for HackMaster claiming that, "Hackmaster is getting a little outdated, with bugs that need attention; some minor, others more serious." -see http://www.tealpoint.com/beta.htm

Has anyone had *serious* problems with HackMaster and with which hacks? Also, suggestions for most useful hacks appreciated.

I just came across this myself. After pondering it for a while, I decided to download and install it. I'll report back with some impressions in a day or two.

HackMaster has been very stable on my VDx. The only problem I've ever had is the crash that occurs after opening it 15 times... it causes an error that requires a reset. I've had some problems where certain apps wouldn't install or run unless I disabled the Hacks first, but other than that, I haven't really had any problems and most of the Hacks I use I couldn't live without (some of their functionality is included in newer versions of the OS, notably MenuHack).

    My list of Hacks includes:
    • BatteryMeterHack
    • MenuHack
    • MiddleCapsHack
    • PhlegmHack
    • SafeHack
    • SelectHack
    • KeyboardHack

I tested TealMaster on both my Prism and my Palm IIIxe and I found out that there are beaming problems using this program. I hope they could fix this because this application looks nice on my prism. I hope all developers decide to color their icons.

Anybody has beaming problems while using TealMaster?

    Thanks

I don't have anyone to beam with...

I've been using TealMaster all day today without any ill effects. I've used every major app and hack on my VDx and even synced a few times... so far so good.

So far, so good but I haven't tried beaming yet. They are updating beta version almost daily. I downloaded yesterday but they've posted a new version(0.97) already. For those who are interested in what it looks like, I took a couple of screen shots.

Did you guys report your beaming problems to the Teal guys? I noticed the latest updates don't list that in the problems addressed.

Do they have target pricing? I didn't see any on the web site.

It had better be cheap, or I won't even think about "upgrading" from HackMaster.

Yes, I did, but they said there must be something else. I think it is TealMaster because I own a PalmIIIxe and a Prism, and both of them have the same problem. Also, I told them that I was using Afterburner 3.0t. I don't have a problem with it using Hackmaster.

    I'm waitng for the update

OK, there's a solution for those of you (us?) that are concerned about the price of a Hackmaster replacement. It's called X-Master and is another Hackmaster replacement that's under development. It's free. You can find version 1.0 at http://linkesoft.com/english/xmaster/

I'm currently running it with Afterburner III, FindHack, FitalyStamp, McPhling (replaces PhlegmHack), TealGlance without any problems.

It'll be $9.95 according to the "register" info. Seems kind of expensive since HackMaster is $5, and I haven't had major problems with HackMaster. It really nags you to register...you have to tap "Please register" window twice every time you do something. Also TealMaster is about 60K on my Prism(HackMaster is 10K). I haven't decided to keep it or not.

One advantage for "upgrading" is that it shows "active patches(hacks)" and analyzes them for potential conflict. Another advantage is that you can set four different mode of activation(activate only certain hacks).

    kalahari,

X-Master seems good, too. Too bad the icon is not color. It seems to do almost the same things as TealMaster. It shows which "patches" are active & you can specify "set" of hacks you can activate, too. Interface is not as good as TealMaster but can't beat the price(free)! I might go with X-Master.

    I'm going to try this!

I found out the problem you could encounter with the beaming fucntion. After installing TealMaster you have to perfrom a soft reset in order to make all your hacks work.

I disabled all hacks in X-Master and installed TealMaster to try it out. After enabling a number of hacks in TealMaster, I activated one (PopUp Names) and got a Fatal Error which resulted in a HARD RESET of my Prism

Maybe X-Master should have been deleted before trying TealMaster?

Are the squished "info" and "prefs" icons on the right column in Hackmaster normal in PalmOS 3.5 or color?

Yes, they're normal in PalmOS 3.5. The Hackmaster author said he would be releasing an updated Hackmaster to fix that problem but I have yet to see that update.

I installed X-Master and have been without any problems so far (2 days). I have tested all extensions but one (Daylight Savings Hack) and all work great. I'm using:

    CalcButtonHack
    DA Launcher
    DSHack
    MiddleCapsHack
    Swipe
    VirtualKB

Where did you get CalcButtonHack? I cannot find it anywhere.

    Thanks,

I installed X-Master, and BAAAAADD things started to happen!

Tried to HotSync and it froze up. It crashed every time I ran DateBk4, Z'Catalog or the built-in Delete function. DiddleBug suddenly was renamed "DyddleBug" in the app launcher. It froze up on every reset, requiring an "Up Scroll Button" reset. After resetting, it crashed every time I tried to run X-Master. It crashed every time I tried to activate Commander after a reset (Commander worked fine, I just could not activate it as my default launcher). Now I am cooked, since I can't delete X-Master because it crashes every time I run the delete app or Z'Cat. OK, so I use Commander to delete X-Master. It still crashes everywhere. I reinstall HackMaster, and it installs it, but HotSync crashes right after the install routine, when it syncs the datebook. Hackmaster crashes when I run it.

Luckily, I backed up to the backup module before installing X-Master. HAAA!!!!!!! It freezes up in the restore process, as it verifies the databases. I stare at the screen for 5 minutes, wondering if anything is really happening. Then I hard reset, then restored again. This time it worked. Ahhhhh!

Perhaps X-MONSTER conflicts with Commander, since it also seems to patch some system trap when it is activated. I don't want to write off X-Master so soon, since LinkeSoft has some very good programs, but if I had to choose between the two I would stay with Commander. I may get brave and try X-Master without Commander, but not until I de-stress a little. Then again maybe not, since every HackMaster replacement seems to come with very bad omens.

Has anyone else experienced this type of crash with X-Master, or successfully used X-Master and Commander?

And TGI used the Backup Module!!!!!!

I to experienced problems with Xmaster. And like the previous post(er) using Commander as well. I tried tealMaster, that was nice, but for ten bucks? Puhlease. Thought I try Xmaster, Fatal Exception! and a couple other data errors I'd never seen before. Why screw with something that works? I reinstalled Hackmaster and am singing like a lark. I can wait for it to be improved.
