    what does anyone here use to convert mp3 or wav TO a midi file playable on the treo 650?
    I have tried several demos on a audio file I want converted and cant seem to make this work

    mp3/wave -> really only works reliably on monophonic sounds, e.g.: one instrument playing a single note at a time.

    It's extremely difficult to take, say the latest britney spears single and convert that audio polyphonic mishmash of frequencies and extract discrete midi notes out of it.

    Not possible in the way you describe. In order for (polyphonic) midi to sound good it has to be composed note by note, instrument by instrument. The difference is midi isn't a recording at all, but instead just a set of instructions like sheet music.
