"What's the best AvantGo alternative? I love the application but it uses far too much RAM on a Treo so I either need to find a way to run it from an expansion card (impossible?) or another application that picks up the news on a PC and hotsyncs the information over. Any ideas?

Since posting this I have discovered Sunrise XP and Plucker Viewer- together they are wonderful! Take a look at the screenshot for evidence- cannot say enought positive things about them..."

Odd that they say it can't be run from an expansion card, AvantGo certainly can with ZLauncher. The AGConnect must remain in ram, but it's only 47k. The databases are on my SD card as well, leaving AG taking up a total of about 100K for me. 47k for AGConnect and another 58K in somethingoranother associated to the main AvantGo program in ram.

Also, Plucker stuff won't do online updates and such will it? Offline, might be a good alternative.

I must say, Plucker + Sunrise is great for morning commutes, absolutely. I have moved on to podcasting for the most part, but I do keep my Sunrise generating in the mornings ( mostly for bathroom breaks ). That and autosync kept me very happy.

Avantgo was just real slow for me. Especially when reading from card. And it crashed often. Plucker, by way of magic I think, is the exact opposite. It is fast when reading content off the card and is rock solid.

Sure you can (I did this last year), just insert the RSS feed into Sunrise and you're good to go.

Avantgo is limited contend and a flakey program. I'm so much happier since I ditched it and switched to QuickNews to read RSS.

Almost anything you'd want to read now has an RSS feed. QN is stable, fairly fast, and great at storing content on your card.

    $15 well spent.

i've never been able to get RSS feeds working to my satisfaction. i don't want to be have to go online to retrieve the story -- i'd like it to be there on my Treo when i'm underground in the subway. but no matter how i'd try to tweak Plucker, i couldn't get it to retrieve the story at the other end of the RSS feed.

if that's how you've got it working, is there something i was missing in the settings? i'll try messing around with it again, because AG is certainly flaky & a bit of a pig.

& i used to be a huge Plucker fan when i had a IIIXe...

AvantGo takes up 100k on my Palm, that's it.. Everything else is on the SD card. It's a little flakey sometimes in online mode, but offline mode is very stable for me. Only problem I ever have is occationally it will refuse to take my login info, and all you have to do to fix that is check "sync all items" or something along those lines in AGConnect.

You may want to try MobilePlay which is touting itself as an alternative to Avantgo. I tried both and end up going back to simple PDA sites in Blazer, but different strokes...

whoops, ok. reinstalled Sunrise & Plucker, now it all works just fine with the RSS links. I'm thrilled about dumping AvantGo...

one huge advantage of ditching AG is what a resource hog it was -- dog-slow, and in ten minutes of use it seemed to use up 10% of my battery.

anyone have good Pluck-able links for

breaking news -- I used to use USA Today's

    http://www.usatoday.com/wireless/PALM_OS/index.asp

but it doesn't seem to work anymore

baseball (the MLB mobile site is very busy and filled with stupid ads)

golf (the golf channel seems to be AG only)

    or Wired? the old one

    http://www.wired.com/news_drop/palmpilot/

    is dead

I recommend you stick with rss feeds, and fetch 1 level beneath them. Go here: http://www.bloglines.com/topblogs . It's a listing of the top rss feeds around. You got your news, wired, etc. Sunrise does a real good job of converting rss feeds into pretty plucker docs.
