    Hi,

Im brand new to palmOS and the Treo650.

Im reading about all these updates, (ROM updates? I assume) how do I tell what version of a rom I am on?

    Im using a Cingular phone.

Also, when someone talks about Custom ROMS is that the way I can make an install with out all the built in cingular junk?

    thanks.

You would need to go to the phone option (where you see the dial pad)

    press the menu button
    Options >> Phone Info

    Hope that helps!

You can either make one, or download one of the several flavors available. The SEARCH feature will get you all the info you need. Do not be afraid to use it.

    Liv,

    Thanks very much.

    I have firmware 1.51
    software 1.17

    and hardware B,

    Does that mean anything?

Insertion, I tried searching Im still just confused on the terms being used.

does a firmware upgrade have anything to do with the ROM?
is the ROM the image of the OS and software?

    Thanks.

I have the same thing with VerizonWireless Treo 650 just purchased on Monday so my intention is to have spouse/owner of the new phone prevail upon Tech Support at the VerizonWireless store to apply the updater (for Verizon) if not already there.

    Searching is a lost art.
fw is for the radio (reception, clarity, etc.)
sw (Rom) is for the palm, yet it does have some influence on the radio.
If you go to Palm/support and find the updater for your phone,
    It's a pretty easy procedure.

cld, you are already running the latest fw/sw

If you got a new phone, it should have the latest firmware. If you want to upgrade it because it has less than 1.04, you should do it yourself. The instructions and files are on the Palm website. I would not trust a Verizon tech to do it. Also, you should have your computer nearby so you can hotsync your data before and after the update.
