I have registered and am very happy with Wordsmith. So happy that it prompted me to purchase a keyboard. I decided on the GoType, which I am very happy with (after the Platinum driver problem was corrected). In searching around Palmgear, I came across LapTopHack. It seems like a really good program, so I downloaded it and installed it. But, I haven't enabled it yet because I'm a bit nervous.

Prior to enabling the hack, I figured I better check the manual. At the end is a discussion by the programmer about incompatibilities with the GoType. Great!!! Not!!!! My question: Do any of you have experience with the LapTopHack? And, do you know about the incompatibility problem? I haven't contacted either the developer or Landware yet. Figured I'd ask you first. I did do a search on LapTopHack here, and came up empty. Any thoughts?

    TIA

After reading the section of the LapTopHack manual you refer to, it appears to me that the GoType! incompatibility is with Hacks in general and not specific to LTH. That said, if you're not using any other hacks and/or you're not setting the F-key preferences in the keyboard driver as described in the LTH manual, chances are using LTH will be ok. I don't have a GoType! (I prefer the Stowaway) and haven't tried LTH as of yet, so I can't give you any real-life experiences.

I use Paul's LapTopHack and Pedit and both are excellent... but I use a stowaway. I recently downloaded wordsmith and like it but don't love it. not sure if i'll register.

However, i was curious as to why you went with the gotype. i can't be sure, but i thought that when i was reading the wordsmith manual they went out of their way to mention that their product was most compatible with the ppk (stowaway).

Thanks, Mark. I enabled it, and it works well. It actually seems so complicated, though, I'm wondering if it's worth it. :-) I guess I'll give it a go, and see if I get the knack of it. People seem to sing such high praises for it, so I think it's worth the effort.

MC, I chose the GoType for a few reasons. First and foremost, the money. I had already installed Wordsleuth on my Visor, and found it so useful that I went to the Landware site to register it ($19.95). I had already decided to buy a keyboard, but I didn't know which one. When I went to Landware.com, I found that they sold the GoType for $69.95 bundled with Wordsleuth. Such a deal!!!! So, instead of $100 for the Stowaway, plus $20 for Wordsleuth, I paid $69.95 plus shipping for both.

Secondly, I kind of liked the idea of a keyboard that did not require an available hard surface to use. With GoType, I can just set it on my lap and type away. The size is an issue, but one that I have already gotten used to. So, I guess it's not an issue. :-)

I had contacted Alexander Hinds regarding GoType compatability with Wordsmith, and was reassured that there would not be a compatability issue. The only small issue is the shortcut key, but that's minor and will be resolved soon, I hope. I find it unfortunate that BlueNomad hawks the Stowaway exclusively, when the GoType is also good. It makes it seem on first impression that the Stowaway is the ONLY compatible keyboard, and that is just not right. I don't know what the business deal is all about, but it still bothers me.

Thanks for your responses. If I figure out LapTopHack, and also join the ranks of those who praise it, I'll post my experiences. I have not yet registered it, but if it's useful to me, I most surely will.

Can someone please explain exactly what LapTopHack does? Is it something only for use with an external keyboard? The description at Palmgear is rather vague.

Someone please enlighten me on LapTopHack's purpose.

    Thanks in advance,

The basic purpose is for external keyboards. It allows one to hit buttons and controls on the Visor's screen from the keyboard, i.e., without having to take your hands off the keyboard, picking up the stylus, and tapping the screen.

It does have a couple of functions that are useful even without the keyboard.
